Ninjabetic 9 Posted July 29, 2016 My surgery date is August 9th and I am so excited I can hardly wait. I chose to have the sleeve done after lots of research and talking with my doctor. I am looking for advice. Should I join a gym? There are several in my area to pick from and I want to make sure I am exercising regularly but should I just stick with the elliptical in my garage? That thing has sat in my garage collecting dust for a long time. I have been walking around the neighborhood each night and am already feeling better but I am worried I may need some more intense exercise. Anyhow, I will stop rambling and wait to read some advice. Being successful on this journey is imperative so please let me know what worked best for you and why. Thanks!
ProudGrammy 8,322 Posted July 29, 2016 join a gym? stick with the elliptical in my garage? @@Ninjabetic hey dude glad you are becoming active pre-op walking is great IMO i would join a gym weights, machines - all that good stuff!! possibly get a trainer for a couple of sessions ask your dr when it's ok for you to start exercising maybe 2, 3 or 6 weeks ie don't overdue anything immediately PO you can start by walking slowly, more and more often building up your stamina check with doc he'll tell you where to go August 9th is right around the corner!! good luck with the sleeve speedy recovery kathy
Elle09 157 Posted August 1, 2016 When I started my weight loss journey I was an avid walker and today I still enjoy putting on my headphones and walking. I also participated in some group exercise classes at the community rec center. I eventually found a small gym/studio that I joined. It has been great in that I can work out on equipment, get personal training, and take specialty group exercise classes, they even bring in speakers for some health and wellness sessions. Overall I like the sense of community/comraderie with being at a gym and I have found a small support group at the gym. Visit each of the gyms generally they will give you free week to try out the place at least that has been my experience. Follow your doctors guidance in regards to exercising and take it slow astounding build your stamina. Good luck with your sleeve and best wishes. Inner Surfer Girl 12,015 Posted August 1, 2016 It's up to you. I joined our local wellness center because I swim and they have an indoor pool. I have an outdoor pool at home but needed somewhere to swim in the winter or when the weather is bad.
Inner Surfer Girl 12,015 Posted August 1, 2016 By the way, since most gyms and fitness centers have personalities and cultures, and you have several to choose from, why not visit a variety before joining so you can get a flavor of the place?
wellah 14 Posted August 1, 2016 Depending on where you are, there are options for discounted memberships. Last year I got a two year package for 24 Hour Fitness for a total of about $315 which lowers the monthly cost to $13.00 or so. Mine allows me to go to any "Sport" location, but not the "Super Sport" ones. I got it through costco, and bought it online.
