Pain Upon Eating - Constant since 2012 Surgery

Recommended Posts

I had a successful surgery in July 2012 but have suffered with pain every time I have eaten ever since.

4 Months post op I had an ulcer that has since healed, but the pain every time I eat has never gone away.

My surgeon stated that the surgery was a success ("Textbook") and referred me to a GI Group for follow up.

My weight plummeted from 236 to 103 pounds.

Forcing myself to eat I have recovered my weight back to 115 pounds.

The only thing the GI docs were able to do was prescribe opioides for pain management telling me that I have functional pain.

FOUR YEARS post surgery with no relief in sight.

Has anyone on this site ever dealt with this issue?

Please, any help is appreciated.

3 years out, I feel ill in one way or another about 80% of the Times I eat.

That’s reality for many people.

How long ago did you see them? What kind of tests did they run? I have had 3 CT scans and 2 gastroscopies for various issues and that seems to get to the root of the problems quickly. There are a lot of people who suffer from varying degrees of pain but I wonder if they get it checked or just live with it. My last bout was kidney stones and a few weeks later high Constipation caused by the surgery for the stones and pain meds. So many things are possible.

This sounds like my life since Jan of this year. I had so many tests done and each one came back normal. My Dr. told me sometimes fat gets stuck in certain places and causes pain. I had surgery 2 weeks ago for them to see what was going on with me. Turns out I had several lipomas (like a tumor made up of fat). Even had one attached to my belly button that hung like a string. I still have some pain from the surgery, but I'm not feeling the same pain I had before every time I ate. Be consistent with them, you shouldn't have to live in pain like this. Hope this helps someone. [emoji18]

bellabloom- Care to elaborate?

It’s really hard to explain it exactly. But I will try.

When I eat it hurts if I don’t chew my food into pure mash. Which can be really hard to do especially in the company of other people- im talking and forget to chew for example.

Even if I do chew it still doesn’t feel great to eat and swallow. It feels like I have a straw in my stomach that is small and tight and it feels like food has to fight its was down. There is a tight kinda stuck sensation and often like a stabbing just below my rib cage. This is especially the case with dense Protein.

In addition after I eat most of the time i just feel ill. Either slightly dumping or full dumping or slightly shaking or nauseated. Tired and like I need to lay down for a while. Just spent and Ill and sick. This is the case for me about 75% of meals I eat.

The whole point of the surgery is to make it physically difficult to eat a lot. Well, that’s exactly how it works.
You trade the ability to overeat with a lifetime of discomfort eating. That’s my situation anyway.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
