My Crazy Gastric sleeve

Recommended Posts

Decided to do the Gastric Sleeve as a New Year's resolution. Went through the entire process for Insurance Approval. Finally set the date for Surgery as 6/15/16. Was told to go on a 1 week liquid diet before the surgery which I followed to the T (and surprised myself in the process).

Surgery went fine on 6/15. Was on the hospital for 2 days. Had the normal gas pains but went away fine. I did not take any pain medication when I was home and things were going quite well. Even attended a wedding that weekend.

A week later I fir the first time had a sharp pain in my stomach. It was insane. I started seating like crazy. I ended up taking the pain meds my Dr had prescribed and it subsided. However for the next few days I felt uncomfortable and couldn't sleep.< /p>

On Saturday July 2nd I started throwing up bloody mucus. At first I thought it was the red colored popsicle I just had but it kept coming and my wife who is a nurse recognized it as blood. She rushed me to the ER.

At the ER they took a bunch of CT Sans and Xrays. They identified 2 abdominal abcesses (which had pus in them) and a possible leak (which ended up not being true - Thank God). I ended up being at the hospital for 12 days and hated every moment of it. For the most part I was on TPN and couldn't eat or drink anything. I had IV's and antibiotics for my infection. I was bored and tired. I had never been in a hospital before except for the 2 days of surgery and hated it. Luckily there was no leak and the abcesses were healing (based on lower wbc count) so they let me go home on 7/14.

My Dr put me back on a clear liquid diet 1 month after my original surgery. Initially I had TPN at home also but that was then taken away. Currently I have just started pureed food but hardly feel hungry and cant seem to eat much. If I eat even a little more than I can or should I end up throwing up. I try and drink the Protein Shakes but cant drink more than a few ounces. I am hoping when I start soft foods my appetite comes back.

I also have fatigue issues through it seems to get slightly better every passing day. I am hoping I can get that resolved as I need my energy back for work etc.

I am down about 45 lbs from 285 to 240.

Hoping the journey from now forward is more smooth.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
