Veterans: What Should Be On My Shopping List for Immediate Post Op Weeks

Recommended Posts

My RNY date is 3 weeks away, and I'd like to do my shopping for the immediate post op period now, get reasonably stocked up.

Here's what I have purchased so far:

Plenty of Premier Protein shakes

GENEPRO Protein powder

Bone Broth (more protein than regular broth)

sugar free Jello and sugar free pudding packets

Tiny medicine cups for drinking

Sugar free beverage mixes w stevia

I plan on getting a case or 2 of Water (my tap water is awful), some coconut water for variety, sugar free Popsicles.

What else do you recommend? Keep in mind that I will be recovering alone mostly, I won't have someone on hand who can run out and grab something I might need. I'd really like to be stocked up in case.

And what's the brand of that clear fruit flavored Protein Drink that people love?

Immediately after RNY gastric bypass surgery, I lost my ability to swallow medium to large pills. Therefore it might be wise to purchase a pill splitter and a pill crusher from your drug store.

Before surgery, my mind was always focused on food and my next meal. After surgery, food was almost the last thing on my mind. The meal volume was incredibly small (2 ounces) per meal. Therefore a can of anything after surgery would make 4 or 5 meals. Plus I lost my hunger. It went completely away. Also my taste buds changed. Food that I liked lost their flavor or became intolerable to eat. Even Water took on a very chlorinated taste and was almost undrinkable. So in your preparations be Fluid. Be willing to experiment after surgery. And don't stock up on too much.

I agree 100% with James. After I came home, the pure smell and site of food made me sick. I stayed at my moms house for the first week and she begged me to take sips of Water and a sip of broth. I couldn't bring myself to do it. How could someone who loved food all of the sudden gag at the thought of it? Be prepared for a big change. I eventually sipped on a lot of broth and worked up to mashed broccoli and eggs. As far as liquids, mio and Water, Protein shakes, Popsicles are a good choice. Trying to swallow pills in the first month was tough for me because I would foam at the mouth and throw it back up so my dr called me in liquid medicine. After roughly 2-3 months I was ok to try the normal medication and it was finally sitting well with me.

Good luck to you :)

I recommend ProtiDiet, a liquid flavoring to put in Water. Each packet flavors 16-24 oz of water & has 15 g of Protein. The flavors are very good, especially kiwi melon-available from Amazon.< /p>

I also recommend getting a mug warmer. It'll keep your soup/broth/decaf coffee warm while it takes you 30 minutes or more to consume it. You can get them at Walmart or Target.

I also got a timer to remind me when to drink, walk, etc.

You might want to get some liquid Tylenol just in case.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
