My gastric bypass operation is booked for 11th August!

Recommended Posts

Hi guys.

This is my first day on here.

Today I started my two week pre-operative liver reduction diet. My surgery is booked on 11th August. So two weeks tomorrow.

I'm so excited to finally begin this final preparation process, and to begin changing my life.

Apart from my weight I have NO medical conditions, and am taking no medication. I have no weight related illnesses. So in that respect I'm very lucky.

However I'm so anxious and scared. I'm so worried that something will go wrong during/after the operation that I find myself crying and panicking.

Has anyone got any advice on how I can stay calm and not panic on the lead up and especially the day of my surgery? What helped for others to keep the, calm?

Thanks

After my RNY gastric bypass surgery a few years ago I built an underground shelter. We were hit by tornadoes around 8 years ago and had a lot of damage. Anyways when we went up to the Museum of Natural History in Chicago this summer with the grandkids, I saw a cute t-shirt. It read STAY CALM AND TRY NOT TO BECOME EXTINCT. So when I got home, I had a sign made up which I hung inside my shelter. So that is the only advice I can give you for staying calm.

Two things to do before surgery.

1. Take a good before photo of yourself so that you can have something to compare it with once you have surgery and lose weight.

2. Walk, walk, walk. It will really help the recovery process go smoothly and speed your recovery and also ease your pain levels.

What helped for others to keep the, calm? I was just way too busy before surgery to get the jitters.

Thanks James

A lot of the people I read posts of on here are in the US, I'm in the UK so dont know how things differ.

In all the information I've been given I've read that the death rate for a bypass is 1 in 200 people. This is what is getting me so nervous.

What does the info in the US say regarding % of death rate and complications? Thanks

I just had bypass surgery 5 weeks ago. I was a little nervous also, but knew that I wasn't really living my life to the fullest. You've obviously decided that this is what's best for you. Keep reminding yourself why you're doing this. Sometimes the things that are best for us aren't necessarily the easiest things to do!

My surgery date is august 8. I too am nervous, but I have some medical issues caused because of my weight. I tell myself I'm doing this to improve the quality and save my life. You say your lucky and have no health issues that is great...but being obese it will catch up with you. I don't know how old you are, I'm 44 and the last few years my health has deteirated because of my weight. You have tell keep reminding yourself your getting this surgery to save your life period.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Had a sleeve in 2017, lost over 100 pounds. Had a DS surgery this year (2025) for more sustainable weight loss. 🤞

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
