Hi everyone! I'm actually pre op, but wanted to ask if anyone has had any problem with absorbing their medications. Also, with Psychotropics, the meds that once made you gain weight-does it still, or does it get in the way of your weight loss? And also with psych meds, if you have changed your meds to ones that would be less likely to affect your weight, what are they and are they as effective? Thanks in advance everyone!! :)

That's exactly what I want to know. I'm currently taking Pregabalin, Metformin, Cyclizine and Morphine. I was wondering about how the RXY bypass especially might affect medication absorption. I've just started looking into this, so please do feel free to suggest a good starting point. I won't see a surgeon for quite a while as my clinical psychologist has said I have to lose 5% of my bodyweight before she'll start the funding request process. Thanks

Hi, I don't know about the various meds, but while I was reading about Bi-Polar meds, I came across Morphine and pain meds, and it was talking about extended release and immediate release, and for some reason they were saying Morphine was one of the only pain meds that was being absorbed in the patient studies. Don't know if that helps, but just thought I'd throw that out there. :)

Thanks, I did find a thread after posting. I did look but still managed to miss it! Oops!

I don't know about the other drugs, but I used Metformin to control my diabetes prior to surgery. When I left the hospital, my diabetes went into remission and stayed there ever since. I am 3 years post-op RNY gastric bypass. I haven't used Metformin or another drug to control diabetes since the day I entered the hospital. The change was that quick.

Im over a year out. Certain birth controls effect my weight and make me gain. My psych meds still seem to work well. Iron absorption seems to be an issue for me. I space out meds and Vitamins through the day. That seems to help.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
