Surgery in 2 days. Any advise?

Recommended Posts

Hi all, my surgery will be this Thursday. I am very nervous and excited at the same time. I wanted some advise as to what to do or take to the hospital. I have read plenty of stories from all the members and everybody has been very helpful, but now that I'm about to go in I went blank.

Please help :)

Mine is tomorrow! It really hit me when I was leaving work today, there may have been a few nervous tears shed on the drive home...

Good luck to you both. I was sleeved on 7/13. It's been a roller coaster ride to get to this point but I know it will all be worth it. The only suggestion I would make is bringing comfortable pajama bottoms and slippers. I was woken up every 2 hours to walk the hospital hallways. And you may want a pillow for the ride home as well as coughing or sneezing. You will be sore in the incision spots. Good luck again!! Keep us posted when you can!!

Make sure if you get nauseated easily you tell the anesthesiologist. They gave me extra anti-nausea meds and I'm still fighting nausea and I'm on day post op. Make sure you rest/sleep when you can because they do come in and wake you several times throughout the day/night. Good luck! Hope everything goes smoothly ! :)

All I really needed was comfy clothes to wear home and a pillow for the drive home. I wore the gown and non-skid socks in the hospital. Make sure if you're driving far you bring your pain and nausea medications with you in case you need them on the ride home!

Good luck to you both! You'll will do great!! :)

I brought tons of stuff, but honestly, I didnt wear my pj bottoms or use my chapstick, or my phone even. Lol. I was in too much pain from the anesthesia gas. I just woke up every hr and walked the halls to relieve it. They gave me non skid socks which were great. I did bring my abdominal binder to wear for the ride home. But as others have said, something to hold on your belly for when you cough or sneeze is vital. I changed into some comfy clothes the day of discharge and went home amd slept. sleeping on my back on an incline helped me a lot. I was sleeved 7/13, and am just now able to sleep on my side again.

Good luck! And don't be afraid to ask for pain meds!

I had my surgery on July 6th,all you need is comfy pj's,You are sore but not unbearably. My boyfriend walked with me the second nite,I went home the next morning. You will do fine,it take time to get use to how much you can drink & eat,as soon as you feel full,STOP!!! If not you will get so nausea!!! I've lost 19lbs. & have tons of energy!!!!!! Good luck!!!!

My savior was my pillow (like an airplane pillow), I used it to prop behind my back, under my arm, on my side, you name it. The amount of discomfort is unreal. Also, your phone charger as they said above. You won't sleep much so your phone and the tv will be your best friend. I also was brought magazines to keep me busy in between. Good luck!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
