Pre Op - Too many feelings (mostly hunger)

Recommended Posts

So my surgery date is 8/1, one week from today. I started my pre-op diet (and quit smoking, and quit coffee & diet coke) 1 week ago today and I've been on a serious emotional roller-coaster for the last 2 weeks or so.

I've been nervous, excited, elated, afraid, sad, etc. One day I'll feel great mentally and physically and then I'll have a day like today where I seriously question everything. Can I do it? Will I really be able to lose the weight? Will I have enough willpower to change my eating habits for life? Right now, I feel like the answer to all of those questions is NO.

All I can think about is heading to grab a giant plate of bean and cheese nachos after work. I don't even usually care for bean and cheese nachos that much but I feel ready to sabotage my pre-op diet for them.

I feel sorry for my boyfriend, who had had to tell me 'NO' in the last 7 days more times than you'll ever have to tell a toddler or new puppy.

Do the cravings and intense hunger ever really go away?

Did anyone else have serious doubts or wet feet? If so, how did you cope?

I seriously need to be derailed from the path leading directly to my favorite booth at my go-to Tex Mex spot.

My surgery will be Thursday, so I'm just a tiny step ahead of you. My first several days seemed impossible. I cried, got angry, laughed uncontollably, etc. All nerves. I was so tempted to eat something bad that it took every bit of my willpower to resist. However, with each and every time I resisted, I was getting stronger. I read other people's stories on here. When I started reading about people who were like me, or in even worse shape than myself, are today running for fun, doing mud runs and marathons, kayaking, enjoying life, I realized there were much bigger reasons than just the inconvenience of my size to be doing this. Reading about others getting stronger and about their victories over the battles that I am facing and will face, has been an encouragement. Begin now to look deeper inside yourself for your own inner strength to get the victory over what has had control over you for so long. The surgery only helps with the physical aspect. There is a mind game to be won, and that battle begins with the pre-op.

It does get easier. The last couple of days, I barely feel hungry at all. When I do, first I drink Water. If that doesn't help after 15 minutes, then I get a shake. I only drink 3 shakes a day, some broth and Water. If i can do it, You CAN do it!

You know now that your boyfriend supports you and has your back. Now, you can show him a glimpse of this new, amazing, confident, inner-strong young lady with determination that is about to emerge when you show him that you've got this.

@@slc3568 Alot of people feel this way before surgery. You are experiencing withdrawal of nicotine and caffeine on top of the usual nerves of WLS. Think of all the things you want to do once you lose weight - remember the answers to "why bother?" when you start to have doubts and stay strong - you have less than a week - you can do this!

Thank you so much for your words of encouragement! I did end up staving off the hunger and sticking to my diet. I have been looking at before and after photos online as encouragement but it might also be helpful for me to read success stories on here. Great idea! I'll be thinking of you Thursday. Good luck!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
