I was wondering If anyone has any suggestions on fruit...I love fruits but I know they are very high in sugar...I never really cared for sweets but every since surgery my taste buds of changed completely. I always am craving sweets now.

I was told by my bariatric team to stick with fruit that has the lowest amount of sugar or a low glycemic index. Those seem to be berries, apples and grapefruit. Their suggestion, like most, is Protein first, veggies second and small amount of fruit if you have room. Since it's cherry season here in Montana I have been eating those, but limiting myself to only a few because before I know it I could eat a whole bag of them. I am almost 6 months out, so my plan could be a little different then yours.

The sugar in fruit is not the same as sugar in sweets. Eat whatever fruit you like. Not a single person on this forum became overweight or became a diabetic because they ate fruit.

If you look at the recommendations on the American Diabetes Association website, you will see fruits are recommended even for diabetics. Some people, even some nutritionists and doctors, think they are a problem - that's wrong.

The reasons that fruits are different are that

  • the dose of sugar in a piece of fruit is low
  • soluble Fiber in fruit slows absorption of the modest dose of sugar that is there

....and of course fruits have lots of great Vitamins, minerals and beneficial phytochemicals. And summer is the best time to seek out fruits!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
