Talked to my husband today about getting gastric sleeve

Recommended Posts

Today a good opportunity came up for me to discuss getting WLS with my husband. I was nervous - I just really didn't know what his response would be. My guess was that he'd be against it - the surgery and spending the money. However, he surprised me! He is totally onside with it! He said that if it'll make me happy then I should do it. I think at first he thought I'd be able to get it done at no cost (I'm in Canada), which I could if I wanted to wait years - so I said, no, we'd have to pay. Again, he was fine with it. It's good to get that hurdle out of the way. Our young daughter was away all day with friends so he and I spent a wonderful day on the deck in the sunshine and chatted for hours. I told him the surgery will be difficult at times. There's no going back, etc. But that I was on the way to weight-related diseases with about 100% positivity. He said, that alone would be enough reason to have it done. Of course, my mind was slipping into a bad direction - is he embarrassed of me and would do anything to have me look better?! I said as much to him, and he said 'of course not!' It's not fair of me to think that way - I'm embarrassed of myself looking this way! Anyway - it's nice to have his support :-)

The Forum is for Questions and Answers. I don't see how this thread is allow, is there not an Admin here? ...

I mean of course I am so happy for you, but there's a place for your post not here!

The post was a nice post, therefore why would admin be required?

Yes it was posted in the wrong forum, but does it really matter.. what matters is that the OP was posting something that is important to her, so there is no need to call her out publicly as if she commited a crime... not very nice... everyone makes mistakes.

In future, a friendly private message would be a better option.

@@TracyBar I'm so glad you have the support of your husband! That's a very important first step!

And to @Sergio_TX. Here's what is says is the purpose of this specific forum....this is copied right from the top. "This is the place to talk about your pre-surgery preparation. Discuss choosing a surgeon, pre-op diets and nutrition, medical tests, and other basic Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy issues." and since gaining support from your family is a big part of the process, I think this is the perfect place for this to be posted......she's now one step closer!....Welcome to Bariatric Pal! There are lots of good people here that can offer lots of good advice and support.....things may not always be posted in the exact spot you expect but for the most part folks here are very supportive no matter where something is posted.

I wish you both much success in your journeys.

Thats okay... welcome to the forum..

You will find that we are a little more relaxed than other forums online... there are forums for each topic, but sometimes people who are new do not know how to navigate the site... so its understood that people make mistakes.

Sorry if my post came across rude, i wasnt trying to be, i was just trying to point out that its okay to make errors

@@TracyBar -- that's what I'd call an ideal "Honey, I had an idea ...." conversation. :)

Congratulations. Sounds like your husband will be the ideal supportive spouse as you travel the WLS path.

Happy days ahead. :)

Thanks everyone! I find this site so supportive - and it's nice to know it's here for each step of this journey. I'm actually not sure where a better place would have been to post this? I'm open to learning how and where. I think I thought because it was pre-surgery that I was in the right place... Thanks again! (And yes, my husband was so supportive and I was taken aback. He isn't the most expressive sort of guy, and can be hard to read because he's generally quiet about his feelings, etc. (whereas I'm the total opposite! lol). I couldn't be happier to have his support - it'll make such a difference if I do get the surgery. Making a decision on my own, and then proceeding with each step on my own would be a lonely and scary journey, particularly if your partner is not onside. Now...I just need to come to terms with the whole surgery thing!

I'm glad you have the support of your husband. My husband too is very supportive. I like you was immediately thinking the same thoughts. However that's just human nature. My husband agreed because he knows my family history and he doesn't want to loose me any sooner than he has to. I unfortunately am having to do six months of physician supervised diet and exercise before my insurance will approve it. I'm on month three and very discouraged. I find these forums very helpful and they seem to calm my nerves. Knowing that there are others going through what I am going through is very helpful.

Fantastic! My husband was worried about it being dangerous and said he wanted more information. I showed him a surgery on You-Tube and he saw a few interviews from my surgeons office and he was all in once he read about it. We need our hubby's on board.

We certainly do need them on board. Watched a surgery?! Not sure I'm ready for that :-)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
