Birth control is giving me problems post op

Recommended Posts

I had gastric bypass 6 months ago, and I steadily lost weight until I got on birth control a month ago. The day I started the birth control I was at 163 pounds, then the next 3 weeks I climbed up to 168 pounds, then stayed at about 166. So, I stopped taking my birth control last week to have my period and I dropped down to 161 pounds as of this morning. I'm terrified that when I start taking it again tomorrow my weight will go up again like it did before. Anyone else deal with this? I had an iud before, and I can't use it bc I had too many complications. I don't want to get my tubes tied bc I might want more babies in a couple of years. Help!!!

Ask your gyno?

Did you weigh yourself every day before starting BC pills? I know that my weight fluctuates 2-4 pounds depending on the content of my gastric system and any Water weight from the heat or my period.

In a 4 week time span you have lost 2 pounds. I would try the pills for a couple more months, but if you really have concerns talk to your gyno.

I have an IUD because I can't hang with the hormone drama of pills.

I do weigh myself everyday. It never fluctuated more than a pound, ever. Now that I'm on bc it's up 5 pounds. 5 pounds would never bother me, except I'm still trying to lose, and I feel like this is preventing that from happening any day I take it. So, I think I'll give it another month or two, but then I'm done with it. Lol. I always hear that gastric bypass patients lose within the first 12 months, and I don't want to waste the rest of the time fluctuating because of birth control. Or only lose weight one week out of the month. It's counter productive. On the other hand, getting pregnant would blow ANY weight loss out of the window.

I am not a bypass patient, but I stalled for a few weeks at 6 months, so it would be that instead of the birth control.

Stall + hormones changes + summer could be the explanation. Your weight is also pretty low at 6 months so you won't be losing a lot in chunks from now on.

There are a lot of factors but call the Gyno office and tell them your concerns.

Weight gain is a common side effect for a lot of BCP. Certain formulations have a higher chance of it than others, so talk to your gyn.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
