I'm getting wayyyyyy ahead of myself since I'm not being sleeved for 13 more days, but I like to plan ahead. Is plastic surgery eligible for FMLA and/or Short Term Disability?

Hey there! I actually just went through this process as I'm about 2 years post op and ready for my circumferential body lift. We saved up the cash, found the surgeon...then had to push surgery off for another year because it wasn't covered for STD. It WAS covered under FMLA but for the STD portion of my claim the defined my surgery as "self inflicted/elective" and therefore not covered under my plan. I was Soooo bummed, but I get it! My surgeons office said they have had some luck in the past, but usually there is another condition (skin infections, difficulty with activities of daily living, other co-morbidities) that get it pushed through. Just means I'll be saving up my vacation and a little extra money to cover my time off when I, hopefully, get my surgery next summer!!!

I work in HR and I guess it depends on the company because we approve fmla and std. Also when I had lap band in 2012 my std was approved. Try the worst they can say is no.

I got FMLA for my plastics. I didn't apply for STD, because my employer pays "catastrophic leave" for up to 90 days, which I was eligible for and used instead.

I've been approved for STD for my sleeve already. I'm wondering if I'll be eligible for it when I decide to have plastic surgery (hopefully late next year).

Ohhhh...I have a print out of my STD plan. If it's simply cosmetic they will not cover it, but if it's for a medical reason (chaffing, skin breakdown, rashes, sores, etc) they will. I'd call them and ask your specific plan details

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
