Hello... WLS journey starting at 31 after 95% heart blockage

Recommended Posts

On July 2nd, I started having pretty severe chest pain/tightness that wasn't going away. I've had little "spells" of chest pain before this, but they'd go away. July 3rd, went to the ER. July 5th, had a stent put in at the age of 31 (about 400 lbs that day) due to a 95% blockage in the front artery of my heart.

Since, I have quit smoking cold turkey (no gum or anything), and have lost about 20 pounds by taking out soda, working with a dietitian, and doing cardiac rehab three times a week. Yesterday I met my new primary doctor for the first time. To my surprise, he said he's adamant about WLS. I had thought about WLS in the past (even making this account on this forum last year, I believe?), but it kinda scared me so I stopped looking further.

Doc said with my sleep apnea, BMI, and the heart issue - it'd make for a good case for my insurance. I'll be meeting with him August 3rd to discuss the next steps.

So, here I am. Wanted to introduce myself and share my story so far.

you've made a wise decision to take the journey bro..like you i started looking into surgery and stopped at one point..it took awhile to push myself to actually do it

getting the ball rolling is the hardest part but once you do the process moves pretty fast

Feel free to poke around. We are a surprisingly wide open group. (Which is rather refreshing). To have that much blockage so young...is it genetic, or just life style?

As you ponder this and poke around this site, think about the fact that this is just a tool, not a magic wand. It can't make you eat and drink the right things for you. You have to make those calls.

But it is one heck of a tool when used correctly. (Dude, we need to talk about the 2nd Adolescence that comes with a major hormone dump, woooooooooooow see: http://www.bariatricpal.com/topic/219760-sex-oh-my-god-sex/).

But all of that said, good first post, I hope we can be of service.

You've already made excellent changes. Much is a matter of the mind, so you should do wonderfully well as you go along.

Fyi, everyone humors @@OKCPirate -- he thinks he invented gonads.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
