James Marusek 5,244 Posted July 21, 2016 If you are lactose intolerant and drink milk or a product containing lactose, within a few minutes you will get an upset stomach and then a quick trip to the bathroom with diarrhea. In my case, lactose intolerance disappeared after about 2 months post-op. If you are lactose intolerant avoid products with milk or lactose. Some Protein drinks contain lactose, others don't. I used Muscle Milk Light powder and mixed it with Water for my Protein shakes.

mngreeneyes 674 Posted July 22, 2016 My surgeon's office suggested Fairlife milk. ITs real milk without the lactose. Its very high in Protein so 8 oz. has 13 g. Protein in 80 calories (skim). My full power protein shakes with 1 scoop powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury chocolate splendor powder is 180 cal. 34 g. protein, 10 carbs, and 0 fat. I most of the time only do a half scoop of powder now, but that is still 130 cal. 24 g. protein, 8 carb. and 0 fat. I am no longer lactose intolerant, but I still use Fairlife because of the protein benefits and I like it in my shakes. Good luck, pam
hawk3323 2 Posted July 22, 2016 (edited) I noticed I had an issue with the artificial sweeteners in those drinks and couldn't stomach those or Isopure Protein drinks. Yuck! I didn't have a problem with milk but I did drink the fairlife skim and added it to my Raw Fit Protein powders. Those are the only ones I can drink and I sprinkle some cinnamon on them. Yum! I am 8 days post op 7/14/16. Ashley Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App Edited July 22, 2016 by hawk3323

JustDanielle 2 Posted July 23, 2016 Thank you all for sharing. I'm in POD 5 and still on sugar free Clear liquids. I don't get to move to stage 2 until the following Thursday (POD10). I know surgeons have different practices but maybe it might be too soon to take in Protein shakes on POD 4. I would call my surgeon and verify. generator77 24 Posted August 5, 2016 My NUT told me that about 50% of people are lactose intolerant after surgery. She warned me of it and I prepared for it but it hasn't been an issue for me. She did say that it tended to be mostly with liquid milk and that milk like Lactaid would be a good option. Or almond milk
Pazza 199 Posted August 5, 2016 I have a similar issue. I take a few lactaid pills with each Protein Drink. I keep them in my mouth to dissolve as I drink. It does the trick for me. Hope this helps.
