Any pre-op'ers out there afraid of being denied?

Recommended Posts

I weighed myself today and I'm 3lbs off from a 40 BMI, which insurance requires to qualify (no comorbids). I'm 6 weeks from my first weigh-in with MD/nut/psych. I'm putting a lot of stake in to this appt so I don't want 2-3 measly lbs to prevent me from having this procedure.

Will they just tell me to go home?

I would suggest gaining a few pounds. (I know that is against everything we are trying to do). The surgeon won't tell you to go home - but insurance may deny you.

Usually they go by your weight at your first visit. We're so used to trying to wear the lightest-weight clothes when we go to the doctor, but for this visit you'll want to wear heavier clothes, maybe even put some weights in your pockets like your phone, keys, etc. I checked your BMI using this calculator &, at 4' 11" & 198 lbs., you're at exactly 40.0. So a weight of 199 will put you at a BMI of 40.2.

Thanks PeggD - unfortunately (funny to say it that way) I now weigh 195 so I have to get it back up before my appointment.

I was in the same position and I just added calories and ate unhealthy which sucked. I have my first pre op appt today and noticed that the scale at the Drs office scale was a little friendly by 7 lbs. at home I weighed 221 at the office I weighed 228. I never wanted a scale to be more until today. Good luck.

Take your shoes off. Slouch a little. One inch is the difference of an entire point on my bmi.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
