A place for bandsters in their 60's

Recommended Posts

I am 61 years old and haven't been banded yet, but I hope to by the end of the year. I have had to have extra psychological sessions because of anxiety of the unknown (life after lapband). I'm coming around pretty good, after going to support group meetings and talking to people who have had the surgery, (and are actually alive and well and happy to have done it. I would like to be a part of this over 60 group.

Welcome Mindbend. I have to say I am thrilled to have had the surgery and I am confident you will be too.

:scared2:I would like to be a part of the over 60's group. Ihave not been banded yet, but I hope to by the end of the year. I have had some anxiety issues about getting the lap band. (what kind of a life will I have after, friends telling me not to do it, I will loose initially, but gain it back.) I'm working through these things pretty well, I have had extra psychological counselling, which is helping, also I've gone to some weight loss support group meetings.

I went to my first support group meeting tonight. I will be banded on 10/14. I have been feeling excited but also a bit nervous. The support group really helped answer my concerns. I am glad I went.

Great to know there are other older bandsters. I just had my surgery on 9/22/08. I'm on liquids (cream Soups, shakes, cream of wheat, boullion, etc) and will be for four weeks. I've already lost 14 pounds, so that's encouraging.

Gail, this is really encouraging for those of us that are just facing this. I didn't have nearly as many problems, or meds as you...so, I'm really hoping to feel younger, more mobile, and get healthy forwhat will hopefully be a longer life!

Stan, I had hunger quite often until my last fill. I am either at my sweet spot or very close. The best bet for snacking is to eat something with Protein. That will satisfy your hunger as well as meet your protein goal for the day. Good luck to you.

OK, this is the most inspriational message I have read so far. I can totally relate to what you are saying........THANK YOU. I was banded on Sept 3rd. The 17th of this month I will have my first fill. I can get around the house OK. I sit on a stool to cook. When I leave the house I use a walker and I only shop in stores that have a motorized shopping cart. My husband (bless his heart) does the laundry. You truly have inspired me. My wish is to be able to get around easier and without the walker and to be able to do more around the house.

God bless you

Haffdime

Things will get better for you. I was banded 14 mos ago. Mobility is better. Iuse an electric handicap scooter. With the weight I've lost so far, I have definitely gained some mobility. I still need knee replacements on both knees, hopefully next year, but walking with a cane more than I used to.

God Bless!

Hi, I just wanted to check in & see how everyone is doing on this busy thread. I am 2 1/2 years. out from lapbanding, & I have lost 130 total. It's like a new life for me. I was pretty well confined to a wheelchair, had been told I needed new knees, but when the weight came off so did the pressure on the knees...2 1/2 years later & no new knees yet, & no more pain. Today I spent 6 hr. out shopping with my daughter for Christmas, & never even got tired..had a great day. This is a brand new phase of my life & at 66 going on 67, I feel better then I did at 45-50. I have gained nothing back...absolutely nothng. I love my lapband. I didn't read all your posts, but I hope you are all happy with yours, or looking forward to it. It was a life saving surgery for me.

If you have any questions that you need to ask someone further out, prease feel free to ask, & I'm happy to meet you all.

Dee:smile2:

What a inspiration! I had surgery in Sept. I have lost between 45-50 pounds. I am still using my walker but I have also started to use my cane for short distances( outdoors). My husband says I am walking more upright and I can tell in smalls ways I am doing better. I have a long way to go but like you..Dee.. the lapband has been the easiest thing I have ever done. I have had absolutely NO problems or discomfort. I feel so fortunate and I do not want to mess up this chance. Thank you for your imput

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
