A place for bandsters in their 60's

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone,

I am in my fifth month of being banded and I am very afraid I have blown the deal. I am hungry , I am cheating and either I can't eat enough of the correct stuff or I eat the bad stuff to excess i wonder if I got another fill , I am at 1ccon a ten cc band . I get stuffed and really can't eat met unless pureed . I am trying vegeterian ffods but am not sure how to count the food ( I am diabetic and am now on 2 different insulins ( humalog before meals and lantis at bed time .) I have only started this a month ageo. Oh I have lost 33 pounds but docs are unhappy that I am stuck there for past 3 months.

Anyone else have problems that are similar?? the dietician I see is of little help out of Dr. Kerlakian's office.

You haven't blown it, but you do need to get back on track! Are you eating your meat first?? It's hard to believe that you have good restriction with only 1cc in a 10 cc band. You should be able to eat your hard Protein. If you can't, I suppose it's possible you're TOO tight. But you have to be able to get your meat in, THEN veggies. Get on the "I'm Here to Help" thread in the mentors' area here. You have to be able to get ongoing support and if you can't get it from your dietician, stay plugged in here. That's essential, especially considering the problems you are having.

Just wondering if any of you long time bandsters have had any problems? For some reason I have been worrying about erosion. When I told my BP dr what I had done,(the band) he was encouraging but said, sometimes they have to be replaced. Just wondering why if there is no other problems. I had to have my port repositioned because it flipped. I am 6 months out now and doing fine. If anyone knows what causes erosion, please let me know. I will do what it takes to avoid it.

Thanks,

jazie

Hello, I am in other threads but I enjoy reading encouraging messages. When I talked to my Dr. other day about the band, his words were, "Betty, you are only 65, and, today, 65 is still very young." Again, I just renewed my desire for the band. I want to be a young 65--active, etc. and I am not now! Yes, I don't sit on my behind--I work everyday and do other things but I am dead tired at night and can't do many things that I want to do.

Betty Joe: Do it! I got banded at 62. I've never regretted it. My friend just had it done at 64. If it wasn't a good choice for older people, Medicare wouldn't be paying for it.

Good Morning and I do appreciate the encouraging words. Two questions: It sounds as if you go back every so often for a "fill"--explain what that is and why? 2. Can anyone recommend Drs. in Alabama and Columbus, Ga. I have done a great deal of work on internet but can't seem to make a selection on the Dr. Thanks so much.

The band is adjustable. There is a little round port they secure in the stomach which they can access with a needle to add Fluid as necessary. The band is usually empty or with very little in it after surgery. At about the 6 week point you go in for your first fill. It usually takes several to get to your "sweet spot", where the restriction is just right for you... you can eat small portions of hard Protein without discomfort.

Suggest you look for threads for your local area to get doctor recommendations.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
