2 years out....hair still falling out!

Recommended Posts

I'll be 2 years out in about two weeks. My hair is still falling out. It did stop about 15 months in but started back up this last March. I've lost about 130lbs. I also have PCOS and Hashimoto's but had this previously and maintained thick curly hair with no issues. I've been to several doctors with varying opinions...my PCP offered me a wig brochure. ???? It's definitely not to that point yet. My B12 was slightly low but nothing outrageous. My Iron comes back on the lower side of normal but my ferratin levels are a bit low. I've added in tons of supplements recently to see if that helps. It is very depressing going from tons of long lovely hair to short, thinning, dry hair. Help!

Have you seen a dermatologist? The problem may not be related to Iron levels. I struggled with hair loss which I thought was related to low Iron and low Vitamin D. I tried 5000 mg of Biotin and rogaine (which causes Hair growth everywhere, even faster than it does on your head), and wigs. Finally a scalp biopsy diagnosed the true cause of my Hair loss, a hormonal issue that is treatable, and my hair is growing back. In the interim try Nioxin, it may help.

Walkermy ...if you don't mind me asking what kind of hormonal issue? I have PCOS which is basically a hormonal issue but never caused Hair loss prior to surgery and I have had it for 16 years. What kind of treatment did you use?

I know you said you have Hashimoto's...have you had your thyroid levels checked recently?

My TSH level can be at a 3ish and cause hair/skin issues...it may not take a 5.

I was one of the unlucky ones who lost hair and my hair became brittle, dry, and had tons of breakage. This happened even though I always got my Protein and Vitamins in and my labs were great. I tried Biotin and it did not do anything for me. It continued to fall out and look horrible even after my weight loss stopped and I was a goal.

I began to add powdered marine collagen to my Water and I drank a cup of bamboo tea everyday (high in silica). These two changes have made a world of difference. Hair loss is a minimum and my hair is shiny and soft again. It probably took about two months of doing this consistency to see the changes. I am a little over two years post op.

Good luck

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
