Exercising after surgery?

Recommended Posts

Hi everybody, I was just wondering how long after surgery were you able to start exercising besides walking? I know I won't be able to lift weights, but I would like to still use my elliptical and treadmill.

Depends on what your surgeon's plan says, not necessarily how good you feel. Your insides need time to heal.

I started Water aerobics 2 weeks post op. Used tegaderm over incisions. It was easy. Not sweating out precious fluids and low impact.

The thing you want to watch out for is anything that will stress the abdomen (even if it's not an exercise that isolates on the abdomen). I don't use elliptical machines as my knees are pretty bad so not sure about those, but a treadmill can be just walking, and you can raise the incline 5 degrees or so for more difficulty without running....
