Does everyone really stick to the pre-op diet 100%. I mean really if I could do such a strict diet I wouldn't be here. I don't mean junk food or pigging out I mean like maybe a hard boiled egg or a salad somewhere in between ?? Be honest

How long did your surgeon suggest the pre op diet?

Mine was 15 days. A week of 2 Protein shakes and one meal of salad with Protein. 8 days of Clear liquids. I cheated once, day 1 of the liquid diet. After that, I stuck to what I was supposed to.

I had a week of Clear Liquids +1 Protein Shake a day. I never cheated. My thought was if I couldn't do this for a week, I had no business having the surgery. The first 3 days were challenging, but after that I was fine. The sugar free Popsicles saved me.

I had 10 day Protein shakes and could have a salad at night. I cheated 1 time in the beginning. You can do it. After day 3, it's seriously so much better. Also, if you could eat a hard boiled egg or salad in the past, you wouldn't be where you are today either.. none of us would. You can definitely do this and in my experience, it made me feel more confident in my abilities to do it after surgery. Good luck!!

@@bellabeans - the point of the pre-op diet is to shrink your liver. The surgeons come in from below your ribs and they want your liver out of the way. Don't cheat on this. If they have to move the liver out of the way it creates complications. Because I stuck to the program, my surgeon had a straight shot, and I was out for 25 minutes. Cut my recovery time down significantly.

I didn't cheat, I wanted to get in and out.

I had 2 weeks pre op diet of 3 Protein shakes and unlimited broth. I didn't cheat at all. I had my surgery 12 hours ago and apart from some shoulder pain from the gas I feel amazing! Best of luck, you can do this! I found the first 2 days and the last 4 days the hardest but in the middle it was fairly easy

You really do need to try and follow the pre op or it could end up postponing the surgery. They give you the liquid diet to try and shrink the fat around the liver to give better visualization to the stomach and other organs they need to keep an eye on.

I was absolutely scared as hell not to follow it.

It wasn't given to me as a suggestion.....it was a mandate that safety implications about my surgery.

I will say this and I mean it.....if you can't adhere to the two week prep diet then you are simply wasting your time having the surgery and won't do the right stuff afterwards, either. Is that harsh? Don't know....don't care....because it is the truth as I have experienced it.

It's only two weeks. Stick with it and see it through properly.

Well said and total agreement !!!!!

Your advice is spot on now.....just like it was spot on when I was pre-op and asking questions like the OP's. I value your wisdom and sage advice.

Good stuff.

I stuck to mine but I am positive that there are many out there that have chosen not to.

I can't imagine a hard boiled egg or piece of chicken being more important than my well being during surgery. But that's just crazy talk on my part.

You do what you think is best for YOU. :D

I cheated on my pre-op liquid diet once with sashimi and a second time with a couple of spoonfuls of caviar.

This was more of a function of having to sit in fabulous restaurants with people for almost 3 meals a day while on my pre-op diet than out of cravings, but still, I cheated.

I was honest with my surgeon about it however, and I think the second best thing to actually following the diet would be to be honest when you screw up. That way your team can evaluate and make the best medical decisions for you. In the end, the surgeon was happy with how much my liver had shrunk when he went in for the surgery but don't use my story as an excuse to cheat.

Hi, can I ask you how much weight did you lose for surgery?? You and I are the same height & weight. I am so scared I haven't lost enough weight for a safe procedure.

I am self pay and had my surgery in Mexico so I wasn't required to lose any weight. With that being said, I did lose 59lbs pre-op (started 1/18/16) because it would have cost me additional money if I was above a 50 bmi. I squeaked in 6lbs under the weight I needed to be to avoid that extra cost. :)

Just finished day 7 of my pre-op diet, and one more week to go. 3 Premier Protein shakes/day and unlimited clear liquids. I'm following the diet exactly. No cheating.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
