Stalling early after surgery?

Recommended Posts

I'm 18 days post-op and I'm looking for any reasons as to why I have gained 1.5 pounds in the last five days. I dropped 17 pounds within the first week and then from week one to week two, just a few pounds. Is this a stall? Is my body in starvation mode? I'll be moving on to the puree stage in a couple of days, but honestly feel like I could start anytime as I've had no trouble taking in any fluids (I'm drinking about 70-80 oz. of Water a day) and only taking in about 500 or so calories a day. It's frustrating, to say the least. So what say you? Am I worrying over nothing? Thanks in advance

Troy

Your body is adjusting g from a loss of 17 pounds in one week. That is huge. Just stick to your plan and realize this is a journey, not a sprint. Don't advance your stages just because you feel fine. Your stomach is healing on the inside and doesn't need the extra work to digest foods it may not be ready for.

You don't mention Protein. 500 calories seems low but the most important number is your Protein. What is your protein target? Are you getting at least that much every day.

A stall about three weeks after surgery is very common.

Hey Inner Suffer Girl-

My NUT said for the first two weeks post-op to just focus on hydration and not even worry about protein or calories. She said the first two weeks I should be getting around 20g of protein and 200-300 calories and by the time I see here for my 1 month follow up I should be up to 45g of protein and 500 calories.

But I'm an overachiever. Today, for example, I got 60g of protein in and around 580 calories. I'd say I'm around 45-60g of protein each day. Thanks for the info!

Troy, I assume that you are a guy? Your NUT's Protein target seems really, really low, especially for a guy.

My Protein target is 100 grams a day and that was from day one. I credit getting in enough protein with the ease of my recovery and initial weight loss. According to my surgeon both protein and fluids are critical for both healing and weight loss.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
