Hi guys. I had gastric sleeve surgery on July 9th. On surgery day I was 222 lbs. Today I'm 215 lbs. Why is the weight going so slow. My twin sister had the same surgery with the same surgical team 2 years ago and she dropped 15 lbs the first week. I just started drinking Protein Shakes on Saturday so was on Clear liquids before then. I got so depressed this morning when I got on the scale and saw 215. My heart dropped and this time is different because I no longer have food to turn to to make me feel better so I stayed in bed all day. Am I overreacting or is there something else I can do to increase my weight loss?

@@shantell500 You lost 7lbs in a week. That's pretty damn good! Don't compare yourself to anyone else - everyone's journey is different. You have less to lose than most of us - so it may be slower. Stick with your plan (get enough Protein and fluids) and the weight will come off. You can't judge weight loss at only a week out - you may still be retaining fluids from surgery and are swollen. Stay strong!

Let's parse this.

Losing seven pounds is to be celebrated by staying in bed. (Moving is better than not moving. Moving burns more calories than lying in bed.)

You're a twin, which means that you and your sister should have the same weight loss. This, therefore, means that you and she had the same grades through school, were interested in all the same things and shared all of your friends. Not for a moment have you veered from each other.

Overreacting? I dunno.

You've lost pretty much 1 lb per day...that's great weight loss, especially so soon post-op.

I don't think it's smart or fair to yourself to compare your weight loss to anyone else's, even your twin. Everyone's body acts differently after major surgery, give yourself some time! I lost 1 lb/day for 23 days and now I'm stuck, but I'm just sticking to the program and I know it will come off. BUT, I'm walking even more and went kayaking for an hour today, even though it would have been nice to nap on the couch. I KNOW moving more will help kick me out of this mini stall I'm in.

Dust yourself off and focus on the positives, like the seven pounds you've lost since 7/9! I've NEVER been able to lose a pound a day before, it's like magic!

Not to mention 222 is a fairly low starting weight (not sure of your height?) so you will generally lose a little slower because there's less to lose (I would assume).

You say you just started drinking Protein shakes on Saturday. How were you getting in your Protein before that?

It sounds to me like your expectations are a little off.

Your primary goal in the early days is healing. Weight loss will come.

Until you are getting in all of your protein and fluids the numbers on the scale are pretty worthless. I highly recommend that you stay off the scale ESPECIALLY if your response is to stay in bed because you don't like the number. That is the issue that would concern me the most. Are you seeing a counselor or therapist? If this is your reaction now I cannot imagine what you will do when you hit your first stall.

Just follow your program.

Make sure you are getting 64 oz of Fluid.

Make sure you are reaching your protein target every day.

Avoid added sugars (especially high fructose corn syrup), starches, and fried foods.

Take you Vitamins and supplements as directed.

Exercise when cleared.

Stay off the scale.

And, Embrace the Stall

I was still on clear Fluid diet before Saturday and at 1 week doctor follow-up was cleared for full liquids. I made appointments to see both my therapist and nutritionist this week and spoke to my patient advocate already. So I'm okay now. Thnx

My surgery was 6/30 and I am 19 lbs down. Trying not to get discouraged either, but praying the weight loss will keep coming and trying to get all my Protein and fluids in. Went back to work yesterday. Good luck to you!

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
