Which Food Did (Or Will) You Miss the Most?

Recommended Posts

I'm truly going to miss sushi. The first date with my beautiful wife was to sushi. The night we were married, sushi. Our first anniversary, sushi. Half of our anniversaries, sushi. We have made a 7 hour round trip just to go for sushi.

I miss things like waffles/pancakes with full sugar maple Syrup, pizza and Mac 'n' cheese, cheese steak subs and Reese cups. With the sleeve I can eat these 7 months post op but I know they are my triggers so it is best to leave alone if I want long term success.

I don't think you have to give up sushi (except maybe rice)!

I have just the opposite issue, and do not miss the junk, but my food world has opened up.

Because of the VBG I had, I could not handle eggs, and many meats & other quality foods for years.

My revision to RNY, has reversed that, and I replaced the junk food (I scream shakes, chocolate and others that would go down easy) with eggs and meats again, in moderation.

Pasta (seafood fettucine, chicken tetrazzini....) and french stick slathered in butter. I am so grateful to my lap-band for forbidding these foods - I simply cannot tolerate them. No matter how well I chew, chew, chew and take small bites, by band puts up a fight very time and I wind up in the bathroom.

So - I miss the memory of those flavours and textures... the silky sauces, the bite of garlic, the twirling of Pasta on my fork and seeing the parmersan melt, the sweet taste of French baguette... but the reward of weight-loss far outweighs the nostalgia.

You know I loved eggs any which way I could get them. I'd go to IHOP and get scrambled with cheese and a sausage link. Now I'm not tolerating eggs made different ways except for hard boiled. My belly gets nauseated just a couple bites in, and this is where my go to Protein when I needed more.

I also get a 1/2 pancake from my husband might eat 1/4th of it but wow it's good and it's my treat now and then.

I miss eating Pasta. Even though I don't crave it anymore, I miss eating my homemade Pasta with my family at gatherings. I usually just eat a meatball and little salad and call it a day

I have recently noticed that nothing tastes as good as it smells. A week ago I was helping a friend with her caretaking duties at her apartment building. It was dinner time. So many wonderful smells were coming out of the various apartments as I vacuumed. As I would smell something wonderful and think I should make that, I realized that I had made many of the things, i.e. Pasta sauce, but none of it tasted as good as it smelled. Or more precisely, none of it tasted as good as it should have because of the smell. My nose still remembers that certain smells meant foods that I loved, but I am finding that the reality is that the taste is not the same as I remember it. Once that hit me, it became easier to not think about eating something because it would be disappointing when it didn't taste like it should.

I have found a few things that I can put up with the difference in remembered taste v. reality, but I now eat a fairly small number of different items so that reality doesn't crash and burn on anything else.

Sticky sweet pastries are the things I think I'm going to miss the most. I know I will technically be able to eat them, but if I'm successful in shifting my focus to nutrition, I cannot see how any honey bun or pudding-filled chocolate covered donut has any kind of nutritional value, and I have never been able to have just one or two bites of something like that. I'm honestly hoping that my taste buds change as so many sleevers have stated happens to them, and that I start craving something that at least has some nutrition in it. :D Beyond that, I have a serious love for bread. Whole wheat, sourdough, white, flat, cheese, fruit and nuts, raisin, zucchini banana and pineapple... the only bread I've never loved had jalepenos in it. I like Pasta a lot, but I love bread. So I'll miss the heck out of that.

There are some things that I miss the idea of rather than the actual item.

When I see things like raspberry cheese cake or cinnamon rolls or stuffed French toast I find myself thinking: there was a time I would have been all over that. But, the thought of actually eating it now doesn't even sound good.

Weirdly, I miss blueberry scones...craving them like I'm in my 2nd trimester or something! And I would dearly, dearly love to chug a 16 oz glass of Water like I used to.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
