BMI 35 surgery tomorrow

Recommended Posts

Hi all, I'm having my band surgery tomorrow. I don't know how I feel at the moment, mostly a mixture of excitement and wondering what the hell i'm putting myself through.

I really hope I end up being one of those people with minimal pain and discomfort after surgery. I've never been under anaesthetic before and I think that's making me the most nervous.

Pre-surgery diet has gone well. I only had to do it for 7 days and only wanted to kill my husband twice!

I'm 5 ft 2 and about 14 stone. I've lost 4 stone before but 2 stone crept back on in 2 years and I wanted this surgery before I end up back where I started (over 15 stone and for my height that's just not healthy physically and mentally).

I'm in the UK and paying privately so the process has been quick. My surgery was booked for two weeks after my consultation. I'm glad I don't have to wait as my weight was really starting to have an impact on my mental health, my marriage and self esteem.

I have this very uncertain feeling in my gut right now but I'm hoping that's just fear of the unknown rather than a gut instinct I should listen to.

Praying for a good recovery. My band surgery was in 2013, I am 5' 0 and I'm not sure how much stones are but I was almost 200 lbs . I remember wanting to run out of the surgical prep room, but I am so happy I decided to go with my surgery. I am healthier and more active than I had been in years. the first few days you will have some discomfort but nothing serious . the gas pain will be the worst of it, remember to stay hydrated and walk around as much a possible without overdoing. concentrate on recovery not weight loss. That will come about. Follow your Dr's instructions and after a few weeks you will start seeing the results. Best of Luck.

Hi Sharpie, I'm a week out now and I have to say I wasn't expecting the pain I had. I was meant to be a day case but ended up staying overnight to due to intense pain levels. I stayed in bed for a few days (getting up to walk around where possible) but getting up felt like my insides were being ripped apart (sorry, graphic but the truth lol).

I didn't have the gas pain in the shoulder but all in my stomach. I was bloated and uncomfortable. It's much better now though.

What was your weight loss like over the first 6 month or so?

Hi!

I've heard most bands are down as outpatient procedures. Luckily, my doctor was very conservative and had planned for me to stay overnight. I don't think I would have made it if I hadn't stayed overnight with a hydromorphone pump. Because, yes, the pain was intense. I had no shoulder pain either. The next week should be much better for you! I stayed home from work for 2 weeks and was fully recovered by then.

It's been 100% worth it and I'd make the same decision again. I was at a 35 BMI on surgery day also. My weight loss slowed for awhile, because I think I waited too long between fills. Now that I think I'm in the "green," I've been losing steadily again.

Be brave and best of luck to you! :)

I am scheduled for low bmi lap band in July. I feel confident in my decision. It because of the wait I hear opinions from close friends and family of which cast doubt in my mind. I am happy to hear of good outcomes. I'm 5'4 203 lbs.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
