Hi y'all, I'm about 3 weeks out from surgery and I'm starting mushy foods tomorrow, right in time for vacation. However, in the full liquid stage, I've had some trouble eating certain foods (yogurt, milk, some types of protein) because of nausea. This has caused me to not eat as much as I should be able to during my full liquid stage. I'm excited to be able to eat more "real" foods but I'm terrified of getting sick. In addition, I am very sensitive post surgery to flavor and aftertaste. I am already very tired all of the time and I'm worried that nausea and my picky taste buds will keep me from beginning to increase my calorie intake. Have any of you struggled with something similar?

I have not had nausea or my taste buds change, but wanted to let you know the soft food stage is fun. My surgeon said that eating or drinking too fast or too much at a time is the primary reason for nausea after the first few days. So, maybe slow down and make sure bites are larger than a dime. Hopefully your taste buds will be normal again soon.

If the nausea continues, don't be shy about calling your doctor and asking for an anti-nausea medication to be called in. Mine did it for me, and I only needed to take it for a short time. Whereas ginger ale would have worked in the past, I can't rely on that anymore. There are tools out there. Once the nausea was under control, I was able to get the Protein down. Good luck!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
