No Dumping syndrome even with eating fatty/sugary food?

Recommended Posts

I'm really confused on this whole Dumping syndrome stuff. My surgeon tells me that Sleeve patients don't get it, however there are countless videos where sleevers talk about how they had it, and how it was horrible. I heard it is triggered by eating fatty/sugary/carb filled foods, but I'm sure we will all be able to have cheat days, does it mean we are all bound to have dumping? :(

Thanks

Dumping is rare with the gastric sleeve surgery....I think I read somewhere about 17% of sleeve patients experience it....It's much more common and in fact expected with gastric bypass.

It is even a fairly small percent with bypass. I had bypass and do not dump.

Like the others said, most people don't dump.

I got a lovely sleeve that doesn't like fats and sugars, which to be honest I'm appreciative of. The first year when I ate junk food I would get hot, sweaty, and my heart would pound for about 20 minutes. The second year I would be puking with slime running out of my mouth within about 5 minutes and then feel all better. Now, in the third year I'm somewhere between being able to eat somethings that are not great for me and just not feeling like getting sick so avoiding them.

From reading posts on here for the last three years, I did not get the impression that most sleeve patients have an issue with dumping. This is generally avoided because with the sleeve you get to keep a little of your stomach, which prevents the sugar and oil from being dumped right into your intestine, which is what makes you sick.

I am 5 weeks out of bypass and have dumping practically every day. Btw my doc uses a triple suture technique which does not cut off the stomach but closes off a large portion of it, the advantage being it is reversible if needed (cancer, malabsorption, etc...). This morning I ate a scrambled egg with cheese and spent the next hour in misery. From what I am reading the problem may be my drinking with meals. Even with small sips the food goes through the stomach too quickly. Uggg.... I do fine when all I eat is Atkins bars and shakes slowly, but I don't like the chemicals and would rather have whole food. I sure hope this resolves at some point!

I'm one of the 17% of sleevers who have dumping syndrome and am over five years out.

I have come to consider dumping a good thing.

It helps me stay true to my sleeve and on track.

If you are among us 17%ers , Welcome! You can either dread dumping and be miserable, or you can look at it as a blessing--a bonus tool. :)

The choice is yours.

Not sure if I am dumping, but I am 3 weeks out and a lot of stuff goes right through me! From Water based Protein Shakes to light custard, to yoghurt and even eggs.....maybe I am just experiencing it as my stomach is new and fresh. I also have no gall bladder....not sure, but I hope I don't have to live in constant fear of racing to a bathroom! It's been the hardest part of my journey

At the risk of sounding really ignorant, what is dumping? I got sleeved 7/22 and my doctor, NUT and all of my paperwork never mentioned it as a potential risk...?

Dumping for most is a sudden onset of diarrhea, sweats and exhaustion.

I've had it twice.. Once from eating cream of crab Soup and once from drinking a little bit of a milk shake

I think really well, but it's super early! SW: 180 Pre-op Weight: 173

CW: 165.4 (I'm 7 days post-op).

I'm struggling with hunger. This liquid diet situation is killing me.

How about you? :)

It also may be caused by gallbladder removal. Some also have there gallbladder removed at the same time. And no gallbladder can cause dumping. I had mine removed 15 years ago so speaking from experience. And I had my sleeve surgery this Tuesday.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
