Any Post-Op Students out there?

Recommended Posts

So, there is a ton of back and forth on how long people took off from work and life post op, I am just wondering if anyone had success going back to school soon after surgery??

I go to a private college so I can only miss so many classes a term and I also don't want to fall behind. I can get work done ahead of time but there are things I need to be there in person for.

Like I said, just wondering about everyone's personal experiences with attending classes post op. Thanks!!!

(I am in nursing school too, so I get that your body needing a break, and surgical complications so no lectures please! )

Also I was only in pain the first 2 days after, I stopped taking pain means the second night in the hospital and haven't taken any since. The faster you get on your feet the faster you will recover was my experience

Thank you for all the responses! I met with my surgeon today and looks like I'll be going under in October so unfortunately I won't be able to do it during my break like I hoped. Going to have to try and get moving and walking asap after. Stressful!

Hi,

I too go to nursing school, and I also cannot be out more than twice a session, which for me is only 8 weeks since i am in an accelerated program. I had my surgery May 12th which was a Thursday and went back to school the Wednesday after to take my exam. I took it easy but I have only miss class the day off my surgery. Now not everyone is the same but i was very determined to finish my session and I was able to finish with an A:)

All of this to say you can totally do it, it all depends on you, and how your body recovers after surgery. Let me know if you have any more questions

Rossella

Hi, I am also in nursing school and am required to complete the clinical component of my class along with everything else. Now I feel that I would be fine attending class but I am not sure about being on-site during clinical where I must be on my feet most of the time during my 6-hour day. Any of you nursing students had issues with this post-op. I do not have a surgery date yet, but I have my insurance approval so I might be looking at the beginning of the fall semester which start in September for my surgery date.

I was doing mental health and i went back to clinical. All i did was talking to my instructor and for the week after surgery i told her that I would have take it easy. They were very understanding

I am worried about clinical too. I feel like sitting in a classroom is one thing, but like you said, working a whole actual shift for clinical is way different.

We got our instructors for this next term of clinical and I haven't had her yet but others have and she is really nice and understanding so I am hoping she will understand that I will have to take it a little easy for a few weeks.

@@limesqueeze23, I got my surgery date 9/9 and we go back to class on 9/6. I guess the sooner the better. I'm hoping my clinical instructor would let me take it easy for the most part. We are doing 6 week rotations and then we change over to a new clinical instructor, ugh????. Now that I that I have a surgery date I will be talking our program director before I start classes. I will keep you updated on how that goes????.

Please do!! I was originally scheduled October 19th until I realized my last clinical day for this term was the 20th. We do 10 weeks a term but only 8 weeks of clinical so I asked to be scheduled the next week so that gives me two weeks I don't have to do clinical and i won't be missing any clinical days, only class. I am hoping all goes well because the week after surgery are my finals. I think I should be able to muster enough energy up to at least drag myself in to take a final and go home.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
