Hello. I am a month out (yesterday) from gastric bypass. I have had a very difficult time getting fluids and food down since surgery. I have gone twice for fluids due to becoming dehydrated. My Dr. has me on nausea medication that helps some. I'm struggling the last few weeks with throwing up even if I'm not nauseated. I've thrown up Fairlife milk, chicken broth, Greek yogurt, applesauce, even Popsicles from time to time. Anytime I put food or liquids in my stomach, I feel heavy and bloated. Has anyone dealt with this? Did it get better quickly? I'm barely eating more than 3-5 Wheat Thins a day and drinking Gatorade. I'm miserable and am not sure what to do.

After RNY gastric bypass surgery, the three most important requirements are meeting your daily Protein, fluids and Vitamins requirements. food is secondary because your body is converting stored fat into the energy that drives your body. Thus you lose weight. After RNY gastric bypass surgery, weight loss is achieved through meal volume control. Initially that is 2 ounces (1/4 cup) per meal. Over the next year and a half that increased to 1 cup per meal.

So the focus should be on Protein, fluids and Vitamins. It appears that you are having difficulties with these.

There are many possible causes. The two main ones are strictures and ulcers. Here is an article that describes both. http://bariatric.stopobesityforlife.com/obesity-surgery/correcting-obesity/bariatric-surgery-risks/ulcers-or-strictures/

Sounds like there is a stricture! Could be serious. I would get to the hospital. Hope you figure it out and feel better soon! If it is a stricture, they can usually fix it pretty easily and hopefully you'll be eating/feeling better very soon.

I'm 3-1/2 months out now and the last few days am having trouble with eating food and my pouch hurting immediately. I can only take a few bites and then I get a horrible pain in my pouch. I can eat some things (such as popsicles, liquids, oatmeal, no sugar added ice cream). But regular food, any food really (whether it is hard or soft, spicy or bland) bothers my stomach. I'm not vomiting and it's not nausea, but at times feel like I could get sick. It settles down, but only after some severe hiccup/burps, or what passes as a belch after surgery. I'm not sure what is going on. Any ideas? Could this be stricture?

I learned that there could be strictures or obstructions in at least 2 places. One is at the bottom of the pouch as the linke provided by James explains.

The other is where the remnant stomach is attached to the intestine. I don't know the official name of this joining, but it is where I experienced trouble.

Liquids would pass thru the pouch, but couldn't make it past this lower joining, so I experienced bloating and nausea before vomiting up everything. After several CT scans, my surgeon performed a 2nd surgery, 2 weeks after the bypass, to remove adhesions my body was creating in this area.

Wishing you the best of luck.

Everyone,

Thank you for the replies. It turns out that I did/do have a stricture. I had an endoscopy with dilation last Monday and will need another dilation next week. I'd like to say that the first dilation made a significant difference, but I haven't noticed much change. The nausea is constant and almost debilitating in spite of meds and I'm still struggling with liquids. Hopefully the next dilation helps more.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
