I am looking to have surgery in the upcoming month or so, but I am confused to which surgery would be best. I am a 5'4 male that weights 430lbs. I have high blood pressure, hypothyroidism, high cholesterol, and swelling in the legs. What would be a better option, the sleeve, band, or reau-y? I am a sedentary person, as I spend the majority of my days behind a computer doing research for my doctorate. Any suggestions???

I chose the sleeve because the weight loss isn't as fast as it is with the bypass. I guess I fear what will my body look like after I lose the weight and I prefer to lose 1 pound at a time. Before the GI cleared me for surgery he said that if I had reflux then my only choice would be the bypass. Have you talked to your surgeon about it?

Speak to your surgeon. The band is probably not going to be recommended but the Sleeve or Bypass could both be good options. Based on your medical history and eating habits - they will recommend one that's best for you.

I see the surgeon at the beginning of the month. He requires all clearance before he sees you. Then he submits everything to the insurance. The only thing i am waiting on is to have the psych eval before I see him.

I would probably discourage you from having the band. Many doctors are phasing out lap-band surgery because of problems. You will probably have 3 choices: RNY, Sleeve and Duodenal Switch. If you have severe acid reflux (GERD), generally the sleeve is not recommended because it can make that condition worse. Listen to the advise of the surgeon and the rationale of why he recommended that type of surgery.

Your BMI is about 74...in the practice where I was recently sleeved, you would be a candidate for a Duodenal Switch or a Roux-en-Y bypass, or for a sleeve gastrectomy as a first step, to help you lose some weight prior to a revision to a DS or RNY. This is definitely something that you can only decide in talking with your surgeon, because your co-morbidities will contribute to the decision in a major way. Good luck to you.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
