Feeling frustrated-Not going to meet the goal

Recommended Posts

At my one month appointment I had lost 25 lbs. My surgeon gave me a goal to lose an additional 25 lbs by my 3 month appointment on 7/29.

As the date approaches I am feeling very frustrated and discouraged. I have lost a whopping 8 lbs so far!! 8 POUNDS!! Are you serious!!??

I am getting in my Protein and liquids and started working out with a trainer.

Why am I losing so little and so slow?? I have experienced several stalls along the way which I know is common.

Please. Any suggestions would be appreciated to help me reach my goal.

I think that's an unrealistic goal from your surgeon. You don't have as much to lose as many of us and to expect 50lbs in 3 months is alot. Maybe you need to eat more now that you're working out? I'm pre-op but know that if you're not getting enough - your body will go into starvation mode and hold on to your fat. Stay strong and positive!

We have similar stats, except I was sleeved 5/23. I have only lost 16 pounds! Just do what you know you're supposed to do and hang in there. I think it's harder to lose when we stress too much about it. As long as we don't give up, we will make it!

I understand the frustration. Here is an older thread that may help. If you have already seen this just ignore my post ;)

Your surgeon is an ass. I can't believe he put that unrealistic goal on you. I started the same weight you did and I didn't lose 50 pounds until 5 months. You've lost over 30 pounds in not even 2 1/2 months out. That's averaging like 12 pounds a month! That's phenomenal.

Stop beating yourself up and keep up your Protein and fluids and make sure you're moving and trust the process.

Oh, and ignore your surgeon.

I averaged 10 pounds lost / month my first 4 months post-op. Then things slowed down. ;)

Yet here I am 2 years post-op, 100 pounds lighter than when I started and maintaining easily at 135 pounds.

Tell your surgeon that story. :)

Oh, and he can't possibly expect you to keep the same pace weight loss as the first month. It naturally slows down with time to more "average" losses of 2-4 pounds a week. Someone your weight can expect an average of 2 pounds a week. Sometimes more, sometimes less. It won't be linear, that's for sure.

Seriously??

You just didn't suggest this member "ignore her surgeon"???????

IN MY OPINION: NEVER Ignore your surgeon---ever.

I MEANT ignore his unrealistic weight loss goals he's expecting. It's obviously making her feel like a complete failure, which she's not.

And why don't you just shut the f*ck up for once? Everyone is so sick of you. You know that, right?

IN MY OPINION you are the most obnoxiously passive aggressive person I've ever seen. FRIEND.

I am surprised he gave you a goal related to pounds.

For me, the most effective goals are related to actions/inputs and not results,

Following your program.

Getting in your fluids and Protein.< /p>

Avoiding starches and added sugars.

Taking your Vitamins and supplements.

Exercising.

Etc. are better goals.

If you do that, you will see weight loss. It might be more, it might be less, or it might be exactly 25 pounds, but none of us can control that number.

My guess is that 25 pounds is a guesstimate and not a proscription /requirement anyway.

Just my thoughts.

And, Embrace the Stall

My surgery was May 10 and I have lost 30 pounds in the 2 months since then. I use an app called 'get~2~goal' by geisinger health and it shows trends for weight loss after Bariatric surgery. According to their graphs I am better than the average in my weight lost since surgery. I assume they get that data from their patients. (I did not use them for my surgery but like the app for tracking my weight).

And your loss is pretty close to mine.

You should feel really good about how much you have lost so far. Keep up the good work!

I am going to agree with @Babbs

I lost a lot (maybe 20?) of weight pre-op and then I "slowed" to 15ish pounds the first month and then after that? I was lucky to get close to 10 pounds a month. CLOSE TO. Not 10 lost.

Your surgeon IS an ass to put such pressure on you. Your hormones are whacked, your body is screaming WTF!?!?! Your mind is asking you what the heck you did and where did all the chocolate and potato chips (or in my case, chocolate covered potato chips) go. Add to that your lower BMI? Of COURSE you are going to lose a bit slower.

You are losing at an admirable pace. Follow his medical instructions for sure. His unrealistic weight loss goals can suck it.

@@FabFemale I think you're doing great! I also think your surgeon's weight loss expectation is a little unrealistic.....but perhaps he was just trying to give you a stretch goal......I think some folks do well when presented with stretch goals where other's get stressed out over them. As long as you've stuck to your plan, you're getting all of your Protein and fluids in you have nothing to stress over......and I know you're exercising because you kick my butt on fitbit challenges quite often! :D

Be proud of your accomplishments so far. You're doing great!! This isn't a race. I have to remind myself of that quite often!

Remeber this is just a goal! You will loose more when time gets closer and you go to full liqyid diet. Trust me!! Im a nurse and panicked also. I lost 5 pounds the first month. The NUT put me on partial liquid with one meal a day. Did the trick. I havent even started the process of full liquid. I see surgeon friday to schedule. I still havent hit my "goal".

It sounds like you're talking about the pre-op process......the original poster is post op. :-) She won't be going back to liquids.

Sounds like you're doing well. Good luck on your upcoming surgery.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
