I can't be the only one who feels this way

Recommended Posts

Who, now that they've started their process pre-surgery, has no control about what they're eating? Despite being heavy, I normally try my best to eat healthy. Ever since I started the process, I have no motivation and I don't want to be this way. My insurance doesn't need for me to lose a certain amount of weight before the surgery either.

Does anyone else feel this way or is having issues with this?? Any advice? Thanks!!

normally I did not get fries when I had a burger. the month or two before surgery *if* I wanted fries I had some. so, that may be kind of the same?

now post surgery - not having fries, or the bun :P but I am completely satisfied with my bunless, fry less burger.

I was very naughty after getting my nutrition appts over with. And my surgery ended up being pushed out 2 months because I had gained 7 pounds. And now that my surgery date is set st Aug 1, its still hard to not get out of control. I weigh myself every day to make sure that I am still at the proper weight.

I am working through some eating issues with a therapist, and insurance does not require weight loss, so I'm focusing on thinking about why I'm making the choices I am, but not really trying to stick to a diet plan. Sometimes I find myself taking one of the Buns off of a sandwich, or choosing not to have the fries because it's not really what I'm interested in for the food, and I'm trying to be more intuitive about the eating. Of course, that means I'm having the Cookies or ice cream if I want it, and I know I won't be able to do that as freely after (and likely not at all while I'm losing)... I'm holding my weight within a few pounds, and trying to lay the groundwork for making better choices.

I started seeing a therapist at the beginning stage. That has helped me to stay focused. I often thought "why bother" but realized how much better off I'd be post-op if I worked on making changes now. Now that I'm just waiting for pre-op testing - it's more difficult to stay focused but I go back to the tools provided by therapy. I don't stick to the diet 100% but at least I am now making a conscious decision as to what I eat (where before I ate mindlessly).

Nope! You are NOT the only one. I'm usually much more controlled. I don't know if it's the idea I can't have the food that's tripping me up or the fact that I'm wanting to have a last few meals before my surgery but either way I'm recognizing I definitely need more self control because my surgery is less than two weeks away. The point of the diet, is to shrink the "fattyness" of the liver (which is in front of the stomach) and have an easier surgery. What I've been trying to do now is to wean off meals to liquid. Anything will help.

I was really bad because my only requirement prior to surgery was to no fall below a 40 bmi........It didn't matter if I gained.......It was a very strange time because like you mentioned I normally ate healthy even though I was fat....I just ate way too much.........But once I was on the surgery path....if I wanted it I had it...

Now I'm a little over 8 weeks post op and this surgery is the best thing I ever did for myself!! I am staying on plan and so far down 52 pounds from my highest weight....that includes the weight I lost during the 2 week pre op diet......so 52 pounds in 10 weeks.....who would ever thought I would be able to do that?!!!

I did whatever I wanted before my pre-op diet. One it was a short window so it was unlikely I would gain a lot of weight, and two because I thought I wouldn't enjoy food or my food options would be really limited my entire life. That isn't the case at all. I eat what I want and I enjoy food.

So don't think you have to food funeral because food in the future is going to suck, totally not the case.

I was the same, I had to wait 3 months to see the surgeon to get a date for my surgery and during that time I just stopped caring and ate whatever and whenever I wanted. When I saw the surgeon I was given a surgery date of 2 weeks away so had to start the liquid diet immediately. Although eating poorly for 3 months wasn't the best idea, I was well and truly ready for a change and so I haven't found the liquid diet that challenging as I am mentally ready.

food funerals... sigh.

I remind myself that with the sleeve there is a much lower chance of dumping, so if I want to have a sip of champagne or a bite of cake at a wedding, it'll be OK. I keep in mind that I won't be giving up foods, I'll be giving up QUANTITY. The first year, of course, will be harder as there are foods that aren't recommended for a long time after surgery, but it won't be forever. I am following a moderate fat, high Protein, low carb regimen while waiting for surgery, and it's going OK. I started this process in January. My surgery has been postponed twice, and each time I was more than half-way through the pre-op diet (1st time was 13 days, 2nd time was 9 days), so of course I spent a couple of days being bad; food choices included beer, pizza, wings, ice cream. However, after 2 or 3 days, I went back to 2 shakes, a greek yogurt, and dinner of grilled meat and veggies. I've also been on vacation twice during this time. I've lost about 35 pounds and am holding steady. Now I have to figure out when I can reschedule surgery that will fit into my family and work schedule!

Sometimes I find myself wanting to eat everything and it's normally bad stuff, stuff I know that I wont get to eat after surgery and stuff that I know I will have to completely cut out of my diet. I had gained like 8 pounds at one of my NUT appts and I was mortified. But I knew what was going on, I was eating crap because I knew that within the next few months I wouldn't be able to eat like at all. I also was having trouble getting motivated to exercise, I really have no excuse I have exercise equipment at home.

Hahaha... I did the same thing. My first NUT appointment with official weigh-in was on Dec. 12. They told me to lose 7 pounds. Instead, I gained 5. It was holidays and I was supposed to lose weight?? I was going to be happy if I'd just not gained... but that was not to be. You know what motivates me to exercise right now? If I'm sitting on the lifecycle, I can justify reading for an hour on my nook!

I'm supposed to have surgery next month, and I wanted to get on the ball with exercising. I need to stop making excuses and just do it so that it's not a culture shock when actually have to do after surgery.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
