I asked the nurse at my surgeons office about Vitamins to see what he recommended......she said any chewable....I told her I currently take Centrum for women gummies and she said that was fine...why no gummies from your doctor?

That's interesting. I wonder why not.

They don't dissolve well. My surgeon has seen some labwork come back with some deficiencies with gummies so he stopped allowing them.

My nut said that Gummy Multivitamins do not contain Iron and that I would need to take a separate iron supplement. Apparently it is not chemically possible for gummies to contain iron. I didn't want another Vitamin so I've opted for a regular chewable that has iron.

Hi All -

My gastric surgery is July 28th and I slowly started eating low carb with a replacement shakes to ease into my actual 2 week pre-op plan. I'm supposed to drink 2 shakes for b/l, eat 2 bars as Snacks and/or a shake or lean protein/non-starch veggie for dinner.

Having hashimotos (thyroid) I worked with a non-bariatric focused nutritionist the last several years eliminate foods that are not right for my body. I don't normally eat a lot of soy, whey or milk based products and typically only stevia as alternate sugar. It was interesting talking to several bariatric nutritionists about options and levels of Protein and different perspectives on what I should or should not drink. To whey or not to whey!

It seemed like Premier Protein Shakes (liquid or powder) and their bars were highly recommended by doctors and also on here and other outlets. Can't beat 30g of Protein in a serving so I figured I would try them out.

For convenience, I bought chocolate ready to drink Orgain Grass fed and mixed in some Premier Protein ready made shakes and bars. After one week, my tummy feels a little inflamed - like a gastric ulcer.

Today I have switched to a vegan non-dairy shake and going back to my hydrobeef based Protein powder until my surgery next week. Sadly, not many options for Protein Bars (maybe Quest?).

I suppose what I'm getting at is no matter the expert, I am still the best advocate on how my body feels and sensitivities. Although whey is a leading protein source for pre-op and bariatric patients, I'm finding it's not quite right for me.

Yep. I was really bummed because it did taste good, was filling and economically priced.

Moving on and ignoring that my tummy hurts a little and is hungry tonight!! :)

Big Picture!

@@SwampBillies I bought a huge bottle of the gummy multivitamins too. Before returning them, I'm going to ask my surgeon if they're allowed. My NUT recommended them, so I'm guessing it's okay? I don't know.. I guess it depends on the surgeon.

@@Clarevoyant warm liquids do help to keep you full but it's hard when you dislike beef broth and chicken broth. I bought Campbell's and they taste horrible. Is there another brand to buy that may have a better taste

Hi, I like Swanson's or College Inn chicken broth. They both have less fat or no fat. You might want to to try them. I will be on Protein shakes only. I think 5 a day. Oye, I don't know how I'm going to do it. Hang in there. I will be thinking of you!

@@8petals That is so sweet of your family to be supportive! You are so lucky to have them! <3

The pre-op diet will probably be the hardest part in this whole thing - it will be for me, at least (besides the CO2 gas pain afterwards). I get Migraines when I'm hungry. Excedrin is the only thing that helps my migraines, and I won't be able to take them 2 weeks prior. :( Thankfully, my pre-op diet will only have to last one week. I honestly am dreading it. The best way for me to deal with this dread is to remember why I'm doing this. I can suffer a little for a few days in order to live the rest of my life healthy and in better shape.

You are not a baby at all! Your stomach is angry with you because it is so used to having a large amount of food in it. Since we are overweight, we feel this hunger more aggressively than others. When the stomach empties after the digestion of a meal, its walls come into contact and rub against each other. We have stretched out our stomachs so much, that our stomachs have become irritated. So, when the walls rub against each other, it hurts because of the irritation. We can and will get through this!

Thank-you sweetie! I was just talking to the surgeon at my support group this evening, and he said the pre-op diet is one of the hardest parts because our stomachs are so stretched out that it's normal not to be satisfied. Oh my Gosh, you sound like me! I suffer from migraines too, and I usually take Excedrin or ibuprofen for me It is killing me not to give in and take one. I'm hoping losing weight helps decrease my migraines in intensity and frequency. When's your surgery? Good luck!!

I am just now seeing this response. I don't know why I'm not getting notifications when someone quotes me. Weird.

Anyway, you are so welcome! <3 Yeah, my migraines are so bad that they can make me vomit. It's crazy! Why do you have migraines? Mine are from Pseudotumor cerebri. They told me I need to lose weight in order for the condition to go into remission.

My surgery is August 4th. I'm so excited! :D

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
