I tested positive for H Pylori -- I was hoping to have surgery in 2-4 weeks. Will this delay this?? I am going to call my doctor in the morning but fearing the worst :(

From what I remember, they'll put you on antibiotics and depending on your surgeon, they could delay until you complete a full course of antibiotics (according to their parameters). It might be okay to proceed while still on antibiotics, but definitely check in with your doctor.

check with your doctor. my blood levels were elevated so i was put on 2 weeks of antibiotics and then 2 weeks after that i had surgery. they did do a test on my stomach tissue and found no h. pylori.

you should be able to have surgery after the antibiotics.

good luck!

The only way to determine a positive pylori result is a stool specimen. You could have had hpylori when you were 10yrs old and the antibody will still be in your blood. Stool can confirm an active antigen.

I checked with my doctor and they will re-check me after 2 wks of the medicine. She didn't get me a hard answer but said ideally it would be cleared up. So my hope of a mid-Aug surgery is not crushed :)

They often discover positive h-pylori during an endoscopy (pre-op).

My doctor said much the same thing positive result meant 2 weeks prior antibiotics and 2 weeks after. Then it would mean in 2-3 years EGD and biopsy as Hpylori can lead to stomach cancer. He said it woudl not change my date if I had it.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
