Dumping syndrome for Sleevers?

Recommended Posts

Hi guys, I was told by my Doctor that people who have Gastric Sleeve will never get or have issues with dumping syndrome. However, I was watching online videos where sleeve patients were telling their stories about how they get it and how horrible it was.

What has your doctors told you? And have you ever experienced it after eating a lot of sweets or any food in particular etc?

Thank you!

It's unlikely, but it can happen.

I encountered dumping syndrome years before I had WLS. I got it after my gallbladder was removed. If I ate too much fat and/or sugar, to the bathroom I would go! I am not eating added sugar or much fat anymore, so I doubt it will be an issue. So, if you lose your gallbladder you can dump regardless of having a sleeve, but I doubt you'll be able to eat enough of the stuff that causes a dump if you follow your program.

Unlikely, might happen early on if you flood yourself with sugar or something. Even bypass patients don't dump forever.

We were told that although you may get similar symptoms of dumping - it's not actually dumping.

Up to 17% of sleevers experience dumping. Until you have experienced it you have NO idea what it's all about. :(

No, it's not the slimes. No it's not reflux.

I asked my surgeon before my sleeve surgery 5yrs ago, "How will I know if I have dumping syndrome"? He just shook his head and replied, "You will know. You will just know".

He was correct. I knew it immediately. I still know it because I still experience it.

Does it happen frequently to sleevers? No. But it DOES happen. Don't let anyone tell you differently. Just pray that you are not one of the 17%.

I've come to use it as an additional tool. Just the fear of dumping helps keep my on program.

Yes, it happened to me. I stupidly ate a small bowl of full fat full sugar ice cream about 3 months out, and ended up throwing up and having diarrhea with serious intestinal cramps, laying on my bathroom floor shaking and having hot/cold flashes and feeling like total crap for around an hour after.

Never ate off script again. It was just awful. I still won't eat real ice cream any more because it was a pretty miserable experience.

I'm not sure if it's dumping but I found that I have a very similar reaction to sugar alcohols. Intense abdominal pain, sometimes with diarrhea.

Your surgeon is wrong...it does happen to sleevers! It happened to me when I was stupid and had a hot fudge sundae on vacation last summer. A few bites of that sugary goodness, and I thought I was going die! I thought it was ok where it was ONE scoop of ice-cream...nope!

It's been discussed many times at my monthly support group, and there is about a 50/50 presence of bypass and VSG people there. I would say they have all talked about their dumping experiences.

I have figured what causes mine, too many carbs and/or sugar. Too many carbs (like, rice) will make my heart race and I'll feel like crap for about an hour.. Too much sugar? That's just ugly ;-) But I still enjoy things, just not more than a couple of bites, and I'm ok with that.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
