Fluids is NOT going down well.

Recommended Posts

Surgery was 7/6. Been home since Friday afternoon. I can barely get 20 oz of Water down. I can't get even get an entire shake down. Will it get better? I had a hiatal hernia that I didn't know about until after. It's like no matter how small of sips I take after so many, it's like they sit at the top of my belly under my boobs or it's the full feeling. It is very uncomfortable feeling.

yes it will get better! I also had a hiatal hernia repair and know they feeling you described. For me, it was around day 6 that things started to feel more normal...........In the meantime, try drinking your fluids at different temperatures.....or try sugar free Popsicles....Some folks also have good luck with sucking on crushed ice. Do whatever you can to help get more Fluid down.

It does get better I promise.

Good luck to you and I hope you feel better really soon.

More ideas! Also try all different types of calorie free flavors for your drinks.......hot tea is another option. I found it helped to stand up when I was drinking...

Yes, it will get better.

Sip small amounts slowly. I was to drink amounts with in 30 mins.. Starting out at 2,4,6,8 oz increasing a little each time. As swelling goes down the amount you can drink will increase. Keep sugar free ice pops on hand, they helped with getting in fluids during this stage. Also sonic ice was a godsend.

I don't think the hernia repair has much to do with it.

I agree.....those of us that had hernia repair think some of our discomfort is related.....but on the other hand we never had the sleeve surgery without the hernia repair so who knows?? Maybe the symptoms are the same no matter what.....I just know I had a lot of chest pain for the first several days......but the good news is either way, it does get better for sure!!! I'm 8 weeks today and feel completely normal.

@@LACRACRA2 7/5 for me and also had the hernia repair, and I have the same issue. It's hard to be patient when you're worried about becoming dehydrated! I am getting down about 40-45 ounces of Fluid of the 56 my program wants. Warm definitely does go down easier and less painfully for me.

As everyone else said - it will get better. Don't strive for the full 64 ounces every day - just make your goal to get more in than the day before until you get there. When you get into your second week, you should be able to average between 48 and 64 ounces each day no problem.

Do you all do your Water and Protein shake kind of simultaneously or wait? Like have a one ounce cup of each? I haven't done that but wondering if that would get me at least equal amounts of Fluid and Protein in.

Try different temps too. I found my allowed Soups to go down easier, than cold Water.

Don't fear it gets better and you just need to try to in increase your sip sizes daily. I think back when I started out sipping from a medicine bottle cap after surgery and 8 months later I can do 80-90 oz's in a day easily.

Doing the different temps. Just curious if anyone does Protein and Water at same time or back to back to get it in.

I had a hiatal hernia repair also, and I stayed an extra day in the hospital (to stay on the IV) because I couldn't keep anything down until day 3. Drinking stuff really really slowly helped me get accustomed to keeping things down.

I think my stomach was basically in shock from all the stuff done to it (I had lap band removal, hiatal hernia repair, and sleeve done in the same procedure) so it was just refusing anything put into it initially. If things aren't staying down wait a little bit, then try drinking even less.

When I started drinking I was super methodical...I gave myself 15 minutes to drink 10mL. Once that went smoothly, I slowly upped it... 15 mL in 10 minutes, 20 mL in 5 minutes, etc... take your time and be methodical - I promise it will get better.

I'm 2 weeks post-op today and I just finished an 11oz shake which took me about 15 minutes to drink in its entirety.

Slow and steady and you'll win the race! Best of luck!

Yes. In the early days it is important to do whatever you have to to get liquids and protien in.

Do whatever works best for you.....my plan allowed for counting Protein shakes towards my total Fluid....fluid is fluid.....My advice is to have your primary focus be fluid.....your body can survive without enough Protein for a few days but it can't survive without fluid.........for me focusing on one thing at a time really helped me. good luck!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
