Low blood sugar after eating?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, I was just wondering if any of you have experienced a low blood sugar after eating sweets or really any meal. I had a bad episode last night after eating a small piece of birthday cake (bad, I know). I have had about 4 of these episodes in the last few months, but I don't know how to treat them.

Any advice? (Other than not eating more cake lol) My oldest brother has Type 1 diabetes so I am familiar with helping him when he is low, but this is new for me.

It is called reactive hypoglycemia and I have had several episodes over the last 22 months. It usually happens if you eat too much sugar in a day and can be difficult to stop the vicious cycle.

Your body starts to get used to that higher sugar level and when you don't get it, reactive hypoglycemia kicks in.

I have gotten it when I start my day with cream of wheat and don't follow it with a high Protein snack. I eat a lot of fruit so that is where my usual sugar comes from and that will cause it.

You have to find your happy spot where you can have some sugar in your life but not enough that your body wants more. I have talked with my Bariatric doctor about it and he suggested if I am going to have something sweet or carby like Cereal, I need to follow it with high Protein snack within an hour or so.

That has worked for me as I am not willing to give up the fruit I eat. I have since refrained from eating cream of wheat on a regular basis. I do have it once in a while though

I second what @@Djmohr said - follow up with Protein soon after and that should help a lot. Hope you feel better. I had a lot of these episodes in the beginning but I have way fewer now that I'm nearly a year out.

Thank you. This was a great help! I'm just over a year out from surgery and have had several episodes of low blood sugar. Very scary when it happens.

Im a little over a year out and Im struggling with this. It wouldnt hurt to invest in a glucose monitor. Ive had too many episodes now where I crash, I try to remedy it with like, Peanut Butter crackers and cheese, and then I just crash again, and on and on it goes for the entire day. Protein followup seems to be key, but sometimes you can get too far gone. Ive had blood sugars so low I get confused. You dont want to get to that point. It's scary. Monitoring has helped some.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
