Did you have a catheter during surgery? I've read on some "what to expect" sites that you will but haven't seen anyone here mention it. Seems strange you'd need one if you're supposed to be up and walking so soon. If you did have one did they put it in while you were under? When did they take it out?

Thanks

Ask your surgeon. I talked to my surgeon about it at my pre-op appointment, and told him I wanted one. He laughed and asked me why (he didn't always use them). I outlined a scenario where I'm struggling to get out of bed, can't make it to the bathroom in time (I was on diuretics at the time and peeing frequently), pee on the floor, slip in it, fall and break an arm. I got the catheter.

I had one. It was put in after I was asleep and taken out the next morning.

I would rather soil myself than have a catheter.

No, the surgery is short. As soon as I was in my room, I started walking around the unit.

I had told my surgeon I wanted one as I have incontinence due to a back injury and a very difficult time walking. I was having 3 surgeries and didn't know how I would feel. It was put in after I was asleep. I had no idea I even had it in until I mentioned the next day that I haven't peed since I had gotten there the day before. The nurse said I must have forgotten I told the Dr I wanted one as I have it in. A few hours later they removed it and a few hours after that 2 nurses managed to get me out of bed and to the bathroom. Unfortunately they had to call a PT with a lift belt and finally the 3 of them got me off the toilet as I couldn't do it myself.

If you are able to walk and don't have incontinence you may not get one.

Since each surgeon is different it's probably best to ask your surgeon. Based on most of the responses it looks like most do not.....but for some reason mine did.......they still had me up and walking around my room.....with everything (IV, urinary bag) hook on a pole..... It was fun! lol

Yes. Put in while in surgery. Did not have choice. Had to walk with it. They removed it as soon as I passed the leak test the next day. Every surgeon is different, so be sure to add it to your list of questions.

I did not have one but I had trouble urinating after surgery even though I was up and walking around quite a bit. After midnight that same night my nurse told me she would give me a catheter if I didn't go. So I focused really hard on going because I was scared of the catheter. I walked and walked and ran the Water in the faucets and the shower while I tried. All around the unit were paintings of lakes, rivers and oceans and I took note of all of them as I walked laps around the floor.

At around 4 am I finally went after placing my phone on the sink with a YouTube video of a babbling brook playing. I think my body was just slow to wake up from the anasthesia. The nurse had put a bedpan on the toilet so she could measure my output and luckily I passed the test and didn't get the catheter after all.

I had one and was oh so glad, almost sad when they took it out lol. It hurts getting up and out of that bed!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
