Calling all vsg Patients that are/were 400+ pounds.

I’m STUCK!

I’m currently 410, 2 years ago I was 480, I manage to lose some weight after I found out I was diabetic.

I’ve been looking into getting the gastric sleeve, but was told (my BMI is too high). I’ve also seen where some doctors will have you go on a diet before surgery.

I’m a self pay patient, so I’m looking at going to Mexico.

Has anybody else had this issue? L

The sleeve is the first part of the DS, and it was developed for people with High BMIs. It is easier and faster to do a sleeve on a large patient than a bypass.

You do need a diet before surgery to shrink your liver.

Talk to a few Drs in Mexico and get their opinion. There are several people here that started out over 400 and have been successful with the sleeve.

I was over 400 pounds (closer to 600 than 500) and was sleeved in the US. I couldn't be happier with my choice. My surgeon didn't have any issues with recommending the sleeve for me. I don't know if it makes a difference or not for your surgeon about where you carry most of your weight, but I carry most of my weight in my lower body.

The sleeve can be the first step in a DS but it is also highly successful as a stand-alone procedure.

My starting weight was un the 400s and i had the sleeve less than a year ago. Down to 220

I started at 462 I had a sleeve it worked just fine a lot of Drs push ppl to have bypass instead it's your choice your in charge not them remember that I had to do a diet too before surgery to prove I can lose weight I think most Drs do this I lost 60 lbs day of surgery was 402 in February of2015 by dec I was 280 it works don't allow them to bully you into doing what they want versus what you want for yourself I know a handful of ppl that have had sleeve at over 300 or 400 lbs non of us had a problem losing weight

My Dr. suggested a DS in 2 parts, the sleeve first then months later the 2nd part of the DS.

I only want the sleeve part done. and I went in wanting the sleeve. I am still going thru all the appointments and Nutrition visits at this time.

The Surgeons/Hospital group I am going thru cannot do any WLS on patients over 500 pounds.

They said at the informational meeting I went to that 500 is the max due to the cat scan machines and things available at the hospital.

This is interesting to know because my surgeon suggest that I have the bypass when I really want the sleeve. He said it would be better for my GERD. My everything is leaning toward the sleeve. I am currently 300+ lbs and I was worried that I would not lose enough weight with the sleeve. But thank you.

I am a successful sleever, big advocate....however if you have GERD or diabetes please investigate the gastric bypass as it has a.much better track record on those two points.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
