Inner Surfer Girl 12,015 Posted July 8, 2016 What guidelines were you given on how long to wait between each bite to prevent yourself from eating too fast? I don't recall a specific time guideline. Try taking a very small bite, putting your utensil down, then chewing 20-30 times before picking up your utensil again.
tony031469 81 Posted July 8, 2016 I still eat very fast and I pay for it in the end. I'm trying though. Sent from my SM-G935V using the BariatricPal App
PrinceVanHalen 97 Posted July 8, 2016 I was told at least a minute between each bite. Chew chew chew. I chew till everything is nearly liquid before I swallow it. That also slows things down between bites. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
Shrinkinqtpi 202 Posted July 8, 2016 My nutritionist strongly recommended baby spoons as they help show our eyes what size bites we need to have. The goal is food to go down when it is the consistency of applesauce. We practice preop. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

PaulStephens1975 62 Posted July 8, 2016 Always put your utensil down between each bite and never get your next bite ready while you are chewing.
TYRey12 27 Posted July 8, 2016 I was told 1-4 minutes between each bite Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App Wow! 1 - 4 minutes? That is the perfect example to me of how post-op directions and doctor recommendations in general are wide ranging. My surgeon just told me to take it slow - small bites, chew everything up good and put your fork down between bites. No specific timeframe. I think that would be especially stressful! OutsideMatchInside 10,166 Posted July 8, 2016 The only time I waited between bites was when I started soft foods. It is too easy to overeat at that point. I have never used baby utensils or plates and never plan to. I have very nice flatware and plates and I use those. It is pointless to use that stuff when you live in a real adult world and as soon as you leave your house you are going to have to use real utensils like a grown up. It gives you a false sense of security and an inaccurate view of what a proper small portion is in relation to other things. Using small items so they are just as full as large items, reinforces incorrect portion sizes. JMO

It actually makes it easy for me. I have been able to pay attention to how I feel, and am able to eat less if I wait a minute or two between bites. I can pick up on cues that I'm getting full or satisfied a lot easier;) My doc says after the adjustment period, you can drop it to just one minute in between. yeaaahBEE 29 Posted July 8, 2016 I've been eating my puréed tuna for about an hour now and I'm still not finished. I've been texting and on my computer so that slowed me down. I've been making sure to put my fork down for at least a minute before picking it up again. My doctor told me that if you are eating your meal in under 20 mins, you are eating too fast. Being an overeater myself, I had to really watch this part when starting my soft foods. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
ccflotron34 55 Posted July 11, 2016 This might be a dumb question but is this only a concern once I'm back to eating a "normal" meal like chicken and veggies. I just started the soft food stage and say if I'm eating some cottage cheese or a string cheese do I need to go real slow? It is good to get in the habit of slowing down.
kmorri 1,689 Posted July 11, 2016 I was never told to time anything......just to eat slow chew everything very well and put your fork down between bites.....I've slowed down and think I've pretty much figured out how long my tummy and my brain need to communicate that I've had enough. .....I think if I took an hour to eat I'd end up eating too much because that would be giving some of the food time to pass through my stomach........I think at the end of 30 minutes ....you're done. Just my opinion.
