I've just started this process and am scheduling the seminar (type thing) in the next 24 hours or so.

I'm a college student and am worried about the time span. How long from the start of all this until I'm actually getting the operation? I feel like every situation is a bit different, but was wondering if anybody had a reference.

I just started the process about a month ago and am scheduled for surgery in October. My insurance didn't require the 6 month supervised weight loss that many do. I was hoping to have an earlier surgery date but my surgeon is booked until the fall.

Okay that makes sense. My luck, I'll have to do the 6 month wait, though.

I just wanted to make sure this wasn't going to take years, before I put effort into scheduling.

I started the process last June with the seminar, 7 months of nutrition classes and tests. I had surgery January 12.

I am also a student and I started in January and my surgery date is August 8th so if you need to do the 6 month diet you can expect 6-7 months if things are done in a timely matter. Some insurances require no diet or 3-4 months so you might finish faster.

8 weeks and 6 days. Depends on your insurance and surgeons requirements. To make it go faster educate yourself on the process and life changes so when you talking to your surgeon nutritionist and psyc you're more informed and they require less

It looks like you are in Michigan which fortunately is a state that requires insurance companies to cover the surgery. My first step if I were you would be to call my insurance company and find out what their requirements are.

Mine only required a psych eval, meeting with a nutritionist, and a surgeon consult as long as my BMI was over 40. However, like some have mentioned, other require diet plans and most require comorbidities if your BMI is under 40.

For me the process began on 06/22 and my surgery is 08/01, very quick considering I am an insurance patient. Good luck!

Yep, once submitted to insurance they approved it in less than a week.

If your BMI is over 40, you don't have to jump through a lot of hoops.

I'm hoping it will be quick, I don't really have time

to drag it out! Thanks for the advice!

That's awesome, my BMI is over 40 but my insurance (Affinity) gives me a lot of problems. Lol. Fingers crossed.

My seminar was in January 2016. My initial consult with the surgeon was February 15. 90 days of supervised weight loss, a psych eval and test, Nutrition classes then wait on approval which was given on 6/3/16. My surgeon had vacation scheduled the week I wanted to have surgery so I was scheduled the first one of the day after her vacation on 7/5. I came home yesterday and am doing well.

It doesn't always happen this quickly it took my insurance almost 2 1/2 weeks so be prepared. I met my requirement for approval in 4 days however they didn't officially approve me until 2 1/2 weeks later

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
