Mine consisted of 2 sessions - the first to talk with the psychologist and fill out several questionnaires with a gobzillion questions and the second to go over the results. The questions run the gamut from how you feel about medical issues, family support, addictive behaviors, etc. They are looking to ensure you have a healthy understanding of the ramifications of surgery and a realistic view of what it can and cannot do for you.

Some people are recommended for additional counseling before they are approved, to ensure they are ready.

Mine asked questions about why I want the surgery, what I expect from surgery, if I understood what was going to happen, and stuff like that. No big deal really! You'll be just fine!!

Mine was a 45 minute session, where the psychologist asked me about my history with food, concerns about my weight and expectations from WLS. He wanted to make sure I understood that the sleeve is just a tool, not a miracle and I think he wanted to gauge if I had realistic expectations about the results.

I believe he also wanted to get a sense of my commitment to a healthy lifestyle going forward, as VSG (unlike a gastric bypass) feels almost normal after a while and doesn't typically have physical deterrents like dumping if you've made the wrong food choice, so it's easier in the long term to revert to old habits of unhealthy eating.

Mine was, in my opinion, a waste of time. She basically asked if I knew the risks involved with the surgery, if I knew it was permanent, and if I was aware that I won't wake up the next day a size 2. Then when I said no to her asking if I had any history of anxiety or depression, she told me I just knocked a half hour off our session and sent me on my way.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
