what should I ask anesthesiologist during pre-op appt.

Recommended Posts

Cleveland Clinic called to schedule my pre-op meeting with my surgeon 5 days before my surgery date; followed by a meeting with the Anesthesia Dept. I've had a few in patient surgeons and meet the anesthesiologist just before they take me into surgery and while I chose my surgeon, I've never been in this position to ask questions; so this was new to me. I guess I can do research but doubt i can chose which one.

What always worries me about having surgeries in major hospitals and teaching hospitals is what if some student takes over.

I do not have anything tell the anesthesiologist as I've been through surgeries before with no side effects.

CCF is probably just trying to squeeze another co-pay out of me.

They usually question you, not the other way around.

You'll be fine as long as the student is past 8th grade and passed General Science class.

Hey, you can ask about that.

I agree with @OutsideMatchInside. They will probably be the one with the questions......Here I'll tell you a joke you can tell them...

"Before surgery the patient meets with all the surgery team and each doctor discusses how much they will be charging for their part..the surgeon, the assistant surgeon, and the anesthesiologist....The patient is upset about how high her bill is going to be from the anesthesiologist...So she asks him why it cost so much to be put to sleep......The anesthesiologist replies.....No no go to sleep very very cheap.....wake up, very expensive!!".............haha I crack myself up..hahaha

Seriously I wish you luck. Just try to relax.

I wouldn't worry so much about medical students doing your surgery. I would worry about a saleman doing your surgery!

Did you know that sometimes a saleman who is trying to sell a new piece of equipment to a hospital will actually be invited into an OR and asked to "demonstrate" it??????

Really??? Yep, really.

When asked to sign papers giving your permission to have: students, researchers, cameras and salesmen "observe" your surgery, be careful. Be specific about who and what you want to be the OR during YOUR surgery.

My surgeon wears really thick, thick, thick eye-glasses. So much so, after we went to my first appointment with him, my daughter asked if I really wanted him doing my surgery, maybe he couldn't see. Two things here, he is supposedly the best in CCF, Chief of the Department, and is where patients who have had botched jobs, come to when they need to be fixed or revisions.

Second, I asked one of his interns straight out, if his vision was impaired in any way. they said absolutely not.

I will be careful to see what they have me sign. I had to go to this hospital clinic a few years back for vertigo and was often sitting waiting for this or that test. Over the course of three hours, I must have had 8 students come in and question me about my symptoms and such. ugh. Hoping this is NOT the case in the hospital side of things.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
