Ok. I'm having my surgery on 8/5 and I haven't really worked out much at all. Did everyone start exercising right after surgery? Wondering if people still lost without the exercise. I think once I am recovered from surgery I will try walking. Any suggestions?

Yes, you can still lose without exercise. Quadriplegics can lose weight! It's all about a caloric deficit. You can do that with your butt parked on the couch and never moving, as long as you eat little enough.

That said, exercise is great for your health, and important in maintenance, so it's a good habit to get into. Walking was my primary form of exercise for several weeks after surgery, then I gradually moved on to super-low impact aerobics, then weight training, Pilates, circuit training, HIIT, and jogging. It all just kept building. And by the way I have never set foot in a gym and it's quite likely I never will! This is all stuff you can do at home.

I started walking after surgery, and I was up to one hour (2.5 miles) by just under two weeks. You can walk until you get clearance to do more from your doctor.

so the deal is 90% of this is what you eat and when. you follow your eating plan you will loose weight whether or not you exercise.

most of us were restricted to just walking for around 4 weeks or so while healing.

but when I read the long term success stories, I would say the vast majority of them have found some sort of physical activity they enjoy. the ones who look the best seem to get into some sort of weight lifting.

For me, exercise is more about being healthy, feeling good, and keeping my metabolism revved than anything. Plus, I enjoy it.

I was very immobile pre-op. I got an exercise peddler and worked my way up to peddling it with my hands for an hour a day.

Post-op, I walked some until I was cleared to get in the pool. I have been doing most of my exercise in the pool ever since: Water aerobics, lap swimming, Water weights/calisthenics, etc.

It helps to find something you enjoy doing.

That's a great idea. Didn't realize you can do all of that in the water. Thank you for posting/responding.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
