ZollDoll 21 Posted July 6, 2016 Has anyone had the cardiologist not clear you for surgery? I had my cardiologist appointment this morning. He told me I should have been seeing him before now for an issue that showed up on my previous echocardiogram. My regular dr (who ordered the echo) never told me to followup with a cardiologist. I now have to get a nuclear stress test and another echo but I walked away with the feeling I may not be cleared for the surgery.

So sorry you feel this way. Please don't give up. Keep us updated.
ZollDoll 21 Posted July 6, 2016 Yes I told him I was never told to see a cardiologist before. He seemed baffled about it. I just feel defeated today. Good thing I am still early in the process so hopefully all will go ok.
Miss Mac 6,262 Posted July 6, 2016 Every once in a while, we get a bariatric brother or sister whose pre-op tests saved their lives. Count this as a blessing. When that issue is resolved or treated, you will be in a much better place for an uncomplicated recovery. I wish you the best. Hugs frrom Chicago.
Camber 30 Posted July 6, 2016 I am one of those people whose preop testing saved my life. My echocardiogram found that I have cardiomyopathy. It caught it early and it is reversible. I went on to have my WLS knowing I wouldn't have issues with anesthesia because we sorted out my heart before the surgery. It's frustrating to have delays but it's all about keeping you safe and healthy. Good luck! Sent from my SM-G900T using the BariatricPal App
jea(n__n)ette 98 Posted July 6, 2016 All of these pre-op tests and screenings are for a good reason, to assess your surgical risk. When surgeries are not emergencies (or can wait a few days), the cardiologist's evaluation tells the bariatric surgeon whether your risks are low, medium, or high for complications. In your case, would you really want to go ahead and have the surgery if the potential complications meant you end up admitted to the telemetry or icu floor instead of the bariatric floor? By having these pre-op tests done ahead of time it's a good thing. You and the doctors know what your current risks are, and since the surgery is elective, there's time to improve your health. I'm glad that you're seeing a cardiologist.
Mistie 201 Posted July 7, 2016 Mine did/did not clear me. I went to the card I saw previously (weird issue - caught a virus, it had similar receptors to those on my heart, so when my body fought off the virus, it also attacked my heart). He said I was cleared and was low risk. The bariatric wanted specific words to clear for vsg. He would never write it. It came down to a difference in terminology between what the bariatric surgeon used and needed and what the card said the cards use! (I.e. Similar to a debate between which comes first, a or 1!). Omg! I almost had another set of heart attacks (NOT virus related! Lol)! The surgeon then set me up with a card local to her and in her system-DAYS before my scheduled surgery. He reviewed all records, didn't even make me have anymore tests, and said it baffled him why the original card would not write it up as was needed-and he cleared me. Sometimes there are reasons. It can save lives. Other times, not as much. But it does happen, but doesn't mean it's over.

rdharri 46 Posted July 7, 2016 I'm going for cardiology visit in the morning. I have no idea what to expect other than an EKG. I am hoping for no problems, but if I have a reason to be concerned it would be good to know before surgery.
