Surgeon no longer performing bariatric surgery

Recommended Posts

I just found out that my surgeon is no longer performing bariatric surgery and I have to find a new surgeon. I am completely blown, having been going through this process for 4 months now and expecting to have the sleeve done in the next 2 months. Hopefully the clearances and tests I've done already will be accepted by the new doctor, but this news has me so discouraged

So sorry and very peculiar. I would imagine that the past work will be counted for you, but would look for a group practice under your insurance if possible.

You should also ask the surgeon for a referral for another bariatric surgeon who will accept your preop records. Chances are he knows who his peers are. Might even be within the same hospital system.

I would also imagine the prerequisites you have are made up of part insurance requirements and part surgeons program requirements. So in theory if you are doing things that meet your insurance requirements then transitioning to a new surgeons program should be smooth enough.

Good luck and don't stop fighting for your needs. Shit happens and this won't be your first or last hill!!

Thanks! The office sent me a list of other surgeons, so I called one of them today. It's disappointing though, I really liked my surgeon, but I'm sure there's a good reason why she's not performing WLS anymore.

I would ask each referral if they are a part of a center of excellence. If you have to shop around anyway, might as well pick the best you can.

Good luck!!! Hope everything works out for & You find a new surgeon

bummer! It may not have been meant to be done by this particular surgeon, find you another one. There are no coincidences.

Nonsense, life is nothing but coincidences.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
