Welcome Mrs. Ross! We are glad you found us. I've learned so much from so many in our group here.

You will have to keep us posted on your consultation. I know so many have said they wish they could have done this 10 years ago. You are young and I hope they help you so you don't have to fight this horrible disease for years to come. Keep us posted!

Thank you, Nana! I will keep you posted for sure. I'm so glad to have found this thread to have some friendly faces during this journey.

Yes - I so totally can no longer blame my condition on the baby weight. Haha

U of I was the most recommended by my insurance. According to my insurance company, they have paid for 70 WLS there within the last 12 months. As busy as they are though, I worry how long the process will take? I know, I am inpatient LOL

Good morning Jeanie!! Welcome to the group!! :-) Good luck to you as you go through this journey. My best advice to you is to start forming habits now (no drinking after/with meals, small bites, slow down eating, exercise, etc), do lots of research but remember everyone's journey is different and keep in mind this is a tool. It takes a lot of discipline and hard work. Going in, I was scared due to all the scary stuff I'd read online. I haven't experienced any of that scary stuff (gas pain, surgery pain, nausea, dumping, vomiting, etc). It's great to know those things are possible, but don't get too wrapped up in fear because you may not experience those things. We're here for you. It's an exciting journey. I'd do it again in a heartbeat. Wish I'd done it 10 years ago.

Jeanie I'm not sure of the process with them. I hope it goes quickly for you though. I know the process with Des Moines and Cedar Falls is all about the same and fairly quick depending on the insurance requirements.

I looked in to Cedar Falls, too. There isn't much info about U of I from any posts on here, at all.

Well Cedar Falls doc is Dr. Matthew Glascock. He's very down to earth and great personality. He does great work and his NP is Maria. She's amazing too. The insurance girl is Kim and she totally rocks!!!

I'm super nervous for my first consult on Tuesday! What should I expect at Glascock's office?? They said I could be there for up to 4 hours.

I know at mine here in Des Moines I met with a nurse who entered info in computer and asked questions then the surgeon came in we discussed which surgery and she showed me how it's done. She asked questions too on past surgeries and meds then pressed on belly. Then the dietitian came in she showed me how they help me then the insurance lady came in and told me what was expected by my insurance. I then left and scheduled those appts like with cardiologist and psych dr. It was a good learning experience. Good luck!

Abbie when you go in it starts out as getting all the basic info...you and them both. You will meet with the nutritionist. She's super nice. You will probably talk with Maria the Nurse Practitioner. She is so super AMAZING. She tells it like it is and is very down to earth. I love her. And Kim is the most amazing insurance guru in the world. I love love love her. But you will talk to Kim I'm certain too. You should spend 30-45 minutes with nutritionist. Half hour with Maria. They let you know exactly what steps need to be taken with your insurance, what test you need, and they schedule everything for you. They will give you a lot of information...but they hold your hand through it all. You might meet Glascock that day...but I didn't meet him till he came to one of the group meetings. I hope this helps. Tell Kim...Mindi Woods says hello. She was so amazing at getting me through the insurance. Feel free to text me any time 319-610-1505

Awesome, thank you!! I know my insurance doesn't require any sort of testing or dieting.. so I'll be interested to see how much needs to be done for Dr. Glascock. So exciting!!

That's awesome. What insurance do you have? I'm shopping for a new insurance for the beginning of the year.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
