CLN.BK 165 Posted July 5, 2016 I'm the Store Manager of two retail stores (clothing). I'm on my feet for 8 hours a day. I move boxes weighing approximately 40lbs, climb ladders, disassemble and re-assemble walls using hardware. Although I can delegate a lot of these tasks, I can't count on delegating everything 100% of the time. Also, can I use FMLA for the surgery or no? Thanks in advance for your input! Farcaster 80 Posted July 5, 2016 My surgeon's instructions were not to lift anything heavier than 15 pounds for 6 weeks, so the lifting requirements alone might be a problem. I can also say that you are going to effectively be on a very low calorie diet. I'm two weeks out and just doing a little bit of walking can take a lot out of me. I'm going back to work tomorrow, but I have a desk job. As to FMLA, this absolutely qualifies. Your surgeon's office can fill out any paperwork your employer requires. Bufflehead 6,358 Posted July 5, 2016 If you were my surgeon's patient, he would suggest 8 weeks off and require 6 weeks off as a minimum.
JuliusJ 2 Posted July 5, 2016 I had heard you only need a week off of work but I don't know if this includes heavy lifting jobs. It probably requires several weeks off. I have a job where I work in the field traveling to people's home and in the office at my computer. I don't really do heavy lifting but a lot of driving and stressful situations. I think I am going to take two weeks off when I have the surgery.
becomingmandikaye 262 Posted July 5, 2016 I have a desk job and went back to work today (tomorrow is 3 weeks post op). Physically I'm absolutely fine, but I left early due to sheer fatigue. Being on your feet all day? You're going to need more time off than I took.
NewEm 9 Posted July 6, 2016 If you are lifting boxes 6-8 weeks sounds more like the norm. No less involved than a hysterectomy which my friend just had. She has a desk job and was off 8 weeks after that hysterectomy. Sent from my DROID RAZR HD using the BariatricPal App
BevBrown34 17 Posted July 10, 2016 I was off from work for 4 weeks and I worked at home for 3 weeks before I returned to the office. You will be drained the first few weeks after surgery. I wasn't prepared for the total lack of energy. Don't rush back to work if you don"t have to. Sent from my SM-G930V using the BariatricPal App
Barry W 336 Posted July 10, 2016 I went back after two weeks, but I work a desk job. Re lifting, the surgeon advised not to lift anything more than a gallon of milk for 6 weeks. Yes, FMLA leave can be used.
rebecca wills 190 Posted July 11, 2016 Let me tell you, I'm two weeks post, feel great! But like a dummy I went shopping. I carried the bags in and now I'm sore in my gutt. I took pain pill, went to bed and woke up fine. Wise to rest at least keep in mind your learning a new way to eat! Don't miss this time! robyn6868 3 Posted July 11, 2016 I am a hair dresser and a substitute teacher and I have wondered the same thing about "how much time to take off" Sent from my SM-N920V using the BariatricPal App
CLN.BK 165 Posted July 21, 2016 My surgeon recommends taking 4 weeks off due to the restrictions on lifting 40lb boxes. I'm actually looking forward to this time off. I live very close to the beach, so I plan on soaking up some rays :-)
LizHobbs 27 Posted July 22, 2016 For a month you can't lift anything with 10lbs. You will need at least 8 weeks to recuperate. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
