I'm about a week and a half post op and I can definitely tell my levels of hunger now and whether they are superficial or not. I'm grateful the surgery has done so much to stifle my appetite.

However, I'd definitely warn fellow "new" post ops: avoid social eating interactions. You will not really "crave" the food physically, or at least I don't, but you will feel kind of awkward not being able to eat.

I "miss" eating normally but I also know this is just temporary. Just figured I'd lay my experience out there!

If you can avoid social interactions until you're 6 weeks (when you can try normal foods), I would! I couldn't dodge this one!

It is more about having something in your hand and mouth. Water can totally be that filler. The sooner people learn to love water as the easy way out of social eating the better.

Now that I'm 4 months out (and 47 pounds down) I find eating out is easy and cheaper. My daughter and I just order one meal between us and I don't have to pay $4 for a diet soda anymore. We usually still have leftovers too.

I totally and respectfully disagree! :D

I am very social and told very few about my surgery. I had surgery in May, right at graduation/end of school year/teacher appreciation/Memorial Day picnics/summer vacation time.

I was super fearful going in only to soon realize that people really don't take note of how much or how little you are eating unless you make a big deal of it. (This fear probably came from my fat days when I thought everyone noticed how much food I ate so I closet ate instead. Hmmm...)

I always had a drink in my hand immediately post op and if anyone asked if I wanted a plate, I simply said I wasn't hungry. I didn't go further than that so I didn't invite further conversation.

I just brought my Vitamin Water zero with me wherever I went so I always had something to sip and to hold to keep my hands busy.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
