I had my sleeve done on may 27. I can't seem to get enough calories in a day. I'm averaging 300-500 a day. I was told by Dr and nut that I need at least a 1000. I'm meeting my Protein requirements. Anyone else have this issue or have suggestions?

Hi, I had my surgery on 5/16. By about a month in, I was usually able to hit around 800. My calorie range my doc gave me is 800-1,000. Now I'm hitting my range every day.

Are you on solid foods now? What are you eating? Why do you think you're not getting more in a day?

What are you eating?

A good way to up your calories is to add melted cheese to everything!

If you are getting in your Protein, then try adding some good fats -- avocado, Peanut Butter, etc.

You could eat some complex carbs, like oatmeal.

What does your NUT suggest?

There is no way I was eating 1000 calories only being 5 or 6 weeks out. 600 was probably my average at that point. I wouldn't panic. You will feel hungry eventually and you will look back in awe and wonder when you could only get in 300-500 like you are now. As long as you are getting your Protein in first, there is no reason to eat more than you feel like. Almost impossible at your stage anyway.

I wasnt getting in a 1000 at week 5/6... that took me months. Everyone is different, go by how you feel building it up over time. My NUT is lovely but told me I could try Pasta and bread at week 6.... hell no thanks. Use a bit of common sense, listen to your body and have faith.

Congrats on the surgery!!

My first 2 weeks I was getting less than 200 calories a day because the liquid diet was progressively getting harder and harder for me. Things made me sick that I could eat before surgery. I texted my surgeon since I was overly tired/weak and concerned that I might need to find another way to up my calories. He told me not to concern myself with calories and to just make sure I get at least 2 Protein Drinks a day and stay hydrated. This was MY surgeon of course so yours may be more concerned with calories. Have you tried to call or text him since surgery and let him know you're having trouble reaching his calorie goal?

Are you on soft foods? I made the ricotta bake and also a baked cottage cheese /broccoli casserole which upped my calories. Also make a smoothie with Protein powder, banana and Peanut Butter. Which can add 300 calories to your day.

400 cals is nothing. Use Meal Replacement shakes - they should still be low sugar, but will have some healthy fats added to bump up calories. I liked the SlimFast High Protein/Advanced Nutrition shakes - 180 cals each with 1g sugar and 20g of Protein. 3 of those per day plus a piece of fruit would be 640 cals/day. Add a lowfat greek yogurt and you're up around 770 cals/day. If you get full while drinking the shake, drink half at a time and drink the second half an hour later.

Stay on a schedule, pre plan your meals and Snacks. You're probably not feeling hungry so staying on a schedule helps. Set your phone alarm, fit bit alarm or the like as a reminder to eat.

Some of my Snacks are:

Sargento snack sticks, hard boiled eggs, lunch meat and yogurt. Keep anything that is in small portions ready to eat that is low fat, low carb with Protein on hand.

What are your Protein requirements?

Mine is 90-100

My Calorie is min 600 max of 800 and I'm just about 6 months out.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
