Hello my surgery was June 20th, I dropped 10 pounds so far and I am still on a full liquid diet until Monday. The last two days I was very hungry all day, I felt dizzy and weak. However, I would like to see if it will continue today before I call my doctor. Do you think it could be due to the fact that I am not eating the amount I am supposed to, or lacking some nutrients or Vitamins etc. what do you think?

Are you getting all your fluids in? Minimum 64 ounces? I think dehydration is a lot more likely to cause dizziness and weakness than lack of nutrition -- it takes several weeks if not months for nutritional deficiencies to manifest themselves, and your body has all the energy it needs to run happily stored away in your fat cells. In any event, I do think dizziness and weakness is cause for checking in with a medical professional. Good luck!

ETA another potential problem post-op is low blood pressure. Are you monitoring your blood pressure? Are you taking medications that would lower your blood pressure? Many people who are taking blood pressure meds before surgery need to stop them after surgery because their blood pressure drops. Even people who aren't taking them before surgery may find that their blood pressure drops after surgery to the point of dizziness or weakness. When do you suffer from dizziness and weakness? If it is immediately after standing up (or sitting up from a lying down position) google orthostatic hypotension and see if that seems to fit.

Yes. You need to do everything you can to get in your fluids and Protein. Don't hesitate to call your surgeon if you have ANY questions, especially if something doesn't feel right. I know mine gave me a 24-hour phone number to use. I'd much rather call with a simple question than wind up in the ER.

I had this the first week or so...I was getting plenty of Water but I think mine was low blood sugar. I added a little juice to my water and had some broth. That helped me but I would call your team also!

I agree with the theory that this is due to dehydration. Before the surgery I didn't pay attention to my Water intake and it was never a problem.

However, post-op I try to keep track of my Water intake yet I've been dehydrated twice and had similar symptoms to yours. I passed out one of those times.

Now I make sure I get a minimum of 48 Oz and try for 64.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
